I love the shield for when it came out. It's been mostly solid and ahead of the pack. But make sure you check the shield forum on nvidia. They for about 2+ years now have had massive problems that they just can seem to solve. It really make updates scary to do, because you might end up turning your shield into a problem that just doesn't work as it should. There's no going back after updates. I remember once I did an update and the thing had a sound dropping issue for about 8 months to a year. They finally fixed the issue but the fix added about 20 more issues. At some point I got an update that was good enough and now I just never update it anymore which I'm glad because months after each fix I go and read the forums and you can clearly see a multitude of problems. If this was a small company you could easily say well it takes time but this is a multibillion dollar company and industry leader in their field. I have a fire 4K max and it's super cheap and seems to mostly have caught up with the things you can do on the yield minus gaming. A lot of the problems I have dealt with have to do with streaming services and with plex. If you like to stress and not know when a fix will be coming (and it's been about 3 they've been working on the latest problems introduced) then this is a good machine and very capable of being the best streaming box out there. Oh yeah lastly there's a problem where it floods the storage with junk so all of the space is eaten up in a day or so and it will constantly flash a massive box saying storage almost full on top of anything you're doing ever 30 seconds, I think it's great but I just wanted to warn people of what they might be getting into before they purchase it. Go look at the nvidia forums for the shield before purchasing.
Simply false. For video playback, the shield is still the best device out there. They pulled the plug on some gaming features that I do not use. I have two shields, one is a plex server and works as well as any other PC I've used to host media.

Good luck trying to find another player that has this quality of upscaling, USB Storage, DTS support, advanced cec controls, back lit remote, etc.

If you dont want/need those advanced features, I'd recommend a ccwgtv. Apple TV seems handicapped with certain audio codecs and no interactive netflix.

This is the reason Shield is still expensive. No other devices handle almost all codecs and include DV/HDR.

There are a few that does similar, guess what, they are also priced similar.

If you need a pure passthrough experience, shield is the easiest. So Home theater enthusiasts need this. If you don't listen through a receiver, then yeah I would also just go for a $20 fire stick.

Agreed with the majority of the reviews. Great devices that make for good media center/home theater setups for streaming apps / PLEX playback. Most smart TVs (and their apps) don't have anywhere near the muscle this does... or capabilities in terms of audio / video support (ATMOS, Dolby Vision, etc.).

I have one at each of our three TV locations. But as others have noted, these shouldn't still be $150 to $200. For what it's worth, the resale value seems to hold up well as used devices typically go for $125 to $150. If you're lucky, $100.

Disney + playback is pretty bad on Shield, FYI. The audio cuts out here and there. Plex will end up rebooting the device at times, when playing 4K HDR content. It doesn't happen all that often though. Those are my two biggest gripes. I have used shield devices for a while and enjoy them. It seems a little crazy that it's price point is still holding. Same sale price from 3 years ago.

If you don't have a higher end home theater setup, pass on the Shield. A firestick, Walmart android box, Roku, or old repurposed pc will work. The average person will not utilize the Shield in a way to make it worthwhile. I own 2 Shields and several firesticks. Shield is primarily used when using the home theater. 95% of television viewing is on the firestick. If the prices were comparable..., then Shield would be the obvious choice. Most people could equip every television in their home with one of the alternatives for less than the cost of 1 Shield.

I just recently pulled out the 2019 shield that I bought a while ago and swapped it in for the older version of the shield that I had on my main tv. Couple of thoughts.

First, my initial impressions with the ai upscaling is that it's pretty bad. I've been watching a 1080p show, and I've been noticing a bunch of static appearing in the image. Finally went and looked at the files on my computer, and can't see anywhere near the signs of it in the original. Dropped the shield to play 1080p and it basically went away. Changed the upscaling to basic, and it also went away. Now, I'll admit that the problem was mainly in darker scenes that you could tell were borderline on the original too, but it was making it significantly worse.

Second issue I've had is that with dolby vision enabled, I keep getting drop-outs on the video. From searching, seems to be not all that uncommon. I could have marginal cables maybe? I haven't tried replacing those yet, but probably will. Turn dv off, and everything works fine. Course, that was the reason I'd swapped in the 2019 for the one I'd had there.

So I'm kinda mixed on it. It's still a very good device, and if you value a good quality audio system, I'm not sure there's another great option out there that lets you do pass through audio to your avr from things like plex. Not sure if the amazon devices have ever gotten there. But it's also definitely lacking in some things these days - like the ability to play youtube with hdr. I'd really like to see them come out with an updated version that handles some of the few shortcomings it has, which would put it back on top.

Yes been around for awhile and only $20-30 discounts here and there. People must be still buying these alot if they're not deep discounting these. I have 3 of them and haven't used them in years since all my tvs have built in Google and don't lag
are they recent units and are you willing to sell one unit?

How are you doing the 'VLC to play content off home server'? I'm using Plex, but it sounds like there is another option using VLC. I'm just not sure how you configure.
Yes, I too would like to know as I was only using Plex on Shield.

Funny, I never have any problems with it. Own 2. Runs great.

Request to all SD'ers to boycott this product and hopefully Nvidia makes a new version, I would happily buy if they make a worthy next version.

Where the Shield shines for me is running Plex Server with built-in/free hardware transcoding. You could buy a mini pc to run as a server, an android box as the client, and a plex pass to do hardware transcoding. But the Shield has it all out of the box.

I will say the Shield runs Plex Server great until it doesn't. Then you have a problem. Maybe once every 12-16 months the Plex Server chokes and I will reinstall it and rebuild my library. It's probably repairable but not very easily. It's quick and easy enough to do a clean install anyway.

Could really use an update...I predict it will happen next year when the Switch 2 comes out since the Switch 1 used a similar Tegra chipset.

I still think the Shield is the best of the lot.. with some caveats. It takes real work to get it optimized, but then it should be good for years.

The new Android TV v11 updates have been a disaster, particularly for audio pass-through but also the newly introduced intrusive advertisements and telemetry.

Google has taken over the Nvidia Shield in a big way.

The latest Shield I set up, I rolled the OS back to v8.23 and installed a custom launcher (FLauncher - open source) to avoid the banner ads. It works --perfectly-- for every codec. This takes some work the first time. It took me 2+ hours on power shell / command prompt to 1. roll back OS to v8 and 2. make FLauncher the default launcher. The last time I spent that much time typing in command prompt was when my router bricked after an update. I could probably do it in less than an hour now that I've had that experience.

If you are watching local files from NAS, network, attached USB drive.. the Shield is unbeatable. Of course it also works fine with the usual Android TV apps. I still don't see how firestick or apple tv are actual competition if you use local files. If all one does is stream services, then of course, get a roku/firestick or similar.

Nvidia's too rich to lower their prices and competition ain't that good. My killer feature from this device is the 4K upscale.
