...The latest Shield I set up, I rolled the OS back to v8.23 and installed a custom launcher (FLauncher - open source) to avoid the banner ads....
I use Wolf Launcher, no OS rollback. I don't see any banner ads.

This is the way. Everyone complains about its price, but I love mine.

To each their own, but just how much do you know about Wolf Launcher? Wolf Launcher is a pirated version of ATV Launcher.

Are you sure it is safe? I can suss out dangerous windows/linux apps (for the most part) but I am not so sure of my abilities when dealing with an Android box, are you?

Also.. if you are using the Shield android TV version 9.xx OS, all that crap is still happening in the background, you just don't see it bc you are using an alternative launcher. I've read legit-looking reports of 50%-60% system resources being used for the ads/telemetry in v9.xx OS.

I might be wrong, one never knows if they know enough or not. I do know that the latest Shield I got for a family member that ran terribly on v9.1.1 is now working great, snappy and fast on v8.23. .. of course, this is anecdotal .. I would need to have an N of 50+ to make a solid spreadsheet to prove any of this.

Fire TV Cube 3rd Gen is not a bad option. I have had it for a year but got for decent price. Today it is $109.

God, I wish nvidia will upgrade this product. Had mine for 4 years now and it is still going strong. Will upgrade to a next gen product without a thought. Use mine mostly for Plex and other apps.

I don't really get at this point why someone would buy this anymore. I mean the actual device is old and worth like $99 at this point. Also

How are you doing the 'VLC to play content off home server'? I'm using Plex, but it sounds like there is another option using VLC. I'm just not sure how you configure.
Jellyfin and Emby are other options. I prefer Plex all of them.

there's no better device out there. Sure a roku will do the trick but it is not better. This can run side loaded apps, mount windows shares, NFS and even has a Plex server built in. And it is super fast.

If all you care is Hulu/Prime/Netflix then use a fire stick or whatever your tv offers.

but if you need to stream 4k plex with uncompressed Atmos audio and HDR without transcoding... there isnt really an alternative.

They need a new one with AV1 support and more processing power so it lasts 6 years again.

I had the original shield when it first came out and an update made it useless. It had hdcp errors after the update and I could not use it. Support was useless back then and they could not help. A couple of years later I messed with it again and it worked after another update that fixed the problems but it bricked shortly after and would not boot. Support said it is out of warranty so they won't help.

I use roku and firestick now.

I own 3 and would gladly pay this price if I needed another. No integrated OS offers as many features, is as feature rich or is as responsive as this device, despite its age.

I use them for NAS connectivity, side loaded app usage, cable card connectivity, and standard streaming. I've used them as a Plex server at times, and it connects easily to my NAS Emby server flawlessly.

Lastly, the remote control simply cannot be beat. It's unique, backlit, controls all of my devices, and is super efficient. The combination of snappy responsiveness and the remote control alone make it unbeatable and worth the money IMO. It crushes every alternative that I've ever used. Roku and Firestick usage is painful by comparison.

I might need another one for the bedroom 😆
