Nonsense. Normal people who just use a computer don't backup data but anyone needing 18tbs knows how things work.

I would get this personally. While I don't subscribe to Seagate all being garbage, these WD that I've gotten have all been Helioseal drives (based on HGST designs) and have been cool, quiet, and fast. The initial ones were PWDIS which meant you had to tape the pin, cut it, or use an adapter, but the latest ones haven't been PWDIS so no issues.

I switched from omv and mergerfs with snapraid to unraid a few years ago. Sooo much easier to maintain. Always updated parity, ssd cache arrays, bigger userbase, scheduled scrubs, easy to backup and restore. Had a year of uptime recently before updating
Different strokes for different folks. When unRAID adds support for something with hashes, I may switch over. Their stance on bitrot is bizarre to me frankly, but otherwise it's definitely a more convenient option even with the pay-in.
My drives are primarily media, so scrubs on a schedule is fine for me and I dont need the speed of cache arrays. But I can certainly understand why someone would go the unRAID route.

How long can this be kept in power off state. Lets say I backup my data today and power it off for a year would the data retrieval post a year of power down be reliable?
I've had HDDs powered off for years with no issue (as in, I've had 6+ year old drives that displayed data when powered back on.)
You obviously risk mechanical issues more with very old drives, but the data should be fine for quite a while. Not archival lengths of time, but long enough that something else would probably become a problem first (finding a machine with the right connector, etc).

Still showing "unavailable nearby" for me at BB and out of stock on eBay. Has anyone dealt with Zip before and avoided service fees? I might just go with Newegg and avoid uncertainty, though I'm not a fan of the power switch on the Elements enclosure that you have to manually reset if you reboot your computer. I coulda had the Easystore through BB or eBay yesterday but I couldn't read the security code on the back of my CC and had to have a new one overnighted to me. Yay me... There's also the 14TB Seagate for $150 at Costco to consider; that deal runs for a few more weeks and it's cheaper per TB than either of the WD deals. I haven't had a Seagate drive fail on me (knock wood.)

Just lucked out at my local Best Buy. Went in with an old HDD looking to trade it in for a 10% coupon to use on this drive (offer shown here [bestbuy.com]). I was expecting it to not even work because Easystore is apparently excluded now according to the offer page. The guys in customer service couldn't find the offer for the storage recycle program in the system, and they ended up just marking the drive down 10% because they didn't see a manager anywhere nearby. Paid $179+tax with my AMEX, and I plan on buying something else to hit the $250 requirement to get the $25 back before the deadline.
Was this drive originally available in store? Or did you just place an order there with the discount?
I know the 14Tb is listed for in-store pickup but 16tb and 20tb all seem to be available exclusively online

The 18tb was available in my local store. There were a couple on the shelf I believe.

Does Best Buy still offer the deal to recycle your old drive and get a coupon for a new hard drive? It's been years since I did that with them.
According to an earlier post in this thread, yes. Do note that the coupon would exclude Easystore drives, and the poster lucked out. I'd probably give it a try and recycle an old HDD to see if I can save an extra 10%, hoping this HDD will be in stock. I did this back in 2021 to save 10% off of a 14TB Easystore.

I got the hard disk delivered yesterday.. but..

Getting the error "Not Initialized" and when trying to initialize, getting the error "The device is not ready". Seen this first time after having 20+ external hard disks..

Can I still fix it to use, or I just have to return it.. was trying to know the options, as it seems to be not available any more, and so, no replacement option..

Pls anyone knows if this is fixable, or the disk is bad..

What does WD Data Lifeguard say about the status of the disk/SMART/result of a short test?

Got mine. DOA. Device is reporting only ~149GB of unallocated space, not 16TB. Tried on 2 Windows machines and a Debian one. All three reporting the same.

Tried WD Discovery and WD Utilities and didn't change the space.

Device case does not appear to be tampered with. Box was also sealed, with no signs of being opened.

EDIT 11/27/2023: Returned device today. CS offered to place an order for later delivery when back in stock. Decided to cancel and go with the Costco Seagate instead.
