In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Sunshine: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine
Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt
GameStream sunset announcement: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/a...tification

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.
Isn't this like 6 years old?
I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

If you don't have PlexPass, and you only have the base DS920, not the DS920+, then you do not have an Intel CPU with QuickSync, you have an ARM cpu, and so the only path is DirectPlay. As long as your client devices can directly play the media formats you are sharing from the Plex that's on the DS920, there's no need to transcode.

You will need transcoding when:
  1. Gramps needs to use Plex from his remote TV in Podunk Nowhere with lousy Internet connection rates
  2. You want to stream on a phone with a lousy cellular connection
  3. Gramps upgrades his internet but can't figure out how to set up his Plex client correctly
  4. Gramps runs Plex, has great internet, sets up his client correctly, but his client is a 2012 TV with dinosaur Plex app on it, barely able to even playback
  5. Etc….

Oh, or subtitles are required for odd media formats. Or your playback device doesn't like the source media files, for whatever reason. Or if it's a day ending in -y and Plex just says "Hey, we need to transcode!". Very helpful to have PlexPass + Intel QSV on those days.
Thank you but correction. I have 920+ . Didn't even know they made a regular 920!

Understood; I think you wrote DS920 earlier.

Without PlexPass, the DS920+ chip is nothing special. But because it has QuickSync, with PlexPass, it *screams* as a Plex server, and is a transcoding beast. If you did get into Plex, particularly used remotely, it's fantastic.

Anything can; that's trivial. The question is can the device on the other end play it back without transcoding.

I have two of the old versions and they are still alive and kicking but I will say I dislike the forced ads have gotten out of hand on this device.

They need to either release another model or give us an update. It's been quite a while.

Can you setup a pihole or AdGuard Home setup to block all of the ads?

This is still too much for me to pull the trigger just for Moonlight, but I always want to.

I have 2 of these and I love them. I'm in the market for a third but I can't bring myself to pay almost $200 for a device that was put out in 2019. Don't get me wrong, it's great , but apple at least updates Apple TV about every year or so and it'll suit the needs for 98% of users out there. Unfortunately, I'm on the Nvidia Shield needs an update train before I buy another one.
What are you talking about? NVIDIA Shield still gets updates regularly.

And still the best option because it has Dolby TrueHD and the ability to sideload apps. Smart Tube ftw!!!

I went from the newest Apple TV back to a shield tv because Plex performs so much better for some reason. I do like both, but right now I'm preferring the shield.
