Is it worth 20fps improvement?

I'm not just gaming. Ae, blender. Under $200 I should be good.

Is it worth upgrading from a 3700x?
If you're a gamer and have a good video card, probably wait for a 5800x3d. If you're not a gamer, it's a great deal. If you don't need to upgrade, the 3700x is still good. I'm still running it with a 2070.

My b350 motherboard just died and I actually got a x570 instead of jumping to AM5. I might get the 5800x3d one day when it's even cheaper since I could probably use a GPU upgrade before a CPU.

Although it seems like a waste, I ended up buying one. The X3D is an additional $110+.

I have a 5700G... Before you decide to laugh, I didn't realize when I bought the 5700G, that it didn't support PCIe Gen4, the 5800X does.

So, swapping my current 5700G for the 5800X to get PCIe Gen4 (which should take full advantage of my Gen4 NVMe and my RX 6800 XT). I along with the ~15% uplift in average performance, I should see better GPU and data transfer speeds to boot.

The 5700G I'll likely save for my son's next upgrade.

I did get it at $174.

I have an AMD RYzen 5 2600x six core CPU. If I upgrade to this one, do I need a new motherboard that fits this or would my current motherboard fit this?

I also have Radeon RX 480 graphics card and will probably need to upgrade this as well.

Look up your motherboard. It might support it with a simple bios update.

Great price for 8 cores and for productivity apps.

The 5700X and 5600 are just as good for gaming, use less power (65W vs 105W base TDP), and had deals for as low as $155 ($169 now) and $119 (at microcenter now) respectively. 5800X3D would be the best for gaming but still expensive and 5600 would make the most budget-performance sense in most scenario.

AMD 5000 series prices should come down more given the competing and arguably better Intel CPU model prices have just come down a lot.

5600 is also $128 and will get you 90-95% of the gaming performance of the 5800x

The 5600 also runs comfortably with the included cooler and the 5800x does not come with one

It is basically the same price as 5700X now. I think this is a good price for someone who wants to upgrade an existing AM4 system for not a lot of money.

For gaming, the 5800X3D is quite a bit better in many games but it is also a lot more expensive.

What about 4k gaming

It depends on the game and your GPU. In most cases you will be GPU bound at 4K.

However, if you have a fast GPU, there are plenty of cases where a 3700X could be holding you back. Also, there are some games which are CPU intensive or highly single threaded. Again, in those cases a CPU upgrade would help you.

Question since you seem to know what you are talking about. I cancelled the 5800x because I don't think my motherboard will support it. But I do think it will support 5600 and 5600x. It's only $10 more for 5600x on Amazon. Would you pay the extra $10?
