ENGINEERED FOR HIGH TORQUE AND VERSATILITY: Brushless motor delivers up to 70 ft-lbs of torque for use with a wide variety of fastener sizes and applications
I'm guessing that you select delivery for the ratchet, store pickup for the free battery and just don't pick up the battery. They'll refund the price of the battery after a week or so.
EDIT: I just tried and they won't let me do this anymore. You might just be able to return the battery separately since they're listed separately on the receipt.
Basically buy & return unwanted item.
If ordering online for pickup you can choose 2 different pickup locations.
Put both tool & free battery in cart and it'll show what each one is going to cost...
From my experience, you buy the combo deal after the sales associate escorts you to the register, You walk straight to customer service and return one item. The associate will ask you why the return. I just tell them I don't need the battery ( YMMV...my local store). I was refunded on the spot. It's that easy. HD knows about this "hack". It's not a big deal. They have been doing these returns for years. SD folks just call it a hack.
It's not a hack, it's just making the consumer feel like they're getting a deal. The prices were all adjusted higher. As long as they get you into their ecosystem, they profit. It's all part of their strategy. They aren't idiots.
At first glance I thought this would be an awesome tool. Then I started to think about it that if I want an electric option to drive a lag bolt, tighten nut, loosen stuff, I already have adaptor sets for my drill and driver. (Worst case, I have impact) Along with my existing sockets, those are more powerful and not sure I'd want this extra item in my tool bag/bucket.
Maybe I'm wrong and I'm sure someone will tell this is way more useful, but I'm just not sure. Seems like a good deal with most Dewalt tool only deals around $90 for their ecosystem of tools.
Does anyone with real-world experience using this 1/2 rachet? I have the 3/8" one and I just don't think this would have the torque for most 1/2" applications. I think the 14" and 3/8" are probably the sweet spot.

This is not meant to torque. It's meant to get into tight spaces and spin the nut or bolt. You can then use it like a regular ratchet to do the final torque by hand. Those who think this is for driving lag bolts into oak are sadly missing the point.

How is it not a hack when they've made it harder and harder to take advantage of to the point where some stores refuse to accept a partial returns? For example when it comes to Milwaukee, I've yet to find tool-only deals that are cheaper vs going this route?

We know it's not a "hack", but the word has become part of the SD lexicon. Thanks for the exhaustive market/marketing analysis, though. Do you know of a benevolent tool company, without a marketing department, that sells discounted direct to consumer? Do you know of a better deal on this ratchet? Either would be so dearly appreciated.
