700 series toners have chips. Whereas the 600 series toners have no chips.
This just means refilling (or buying remanufactured) cartridges costs a little extra.
For absolute cheapest monochrome printing, you want a Brother printer that uses 600 series cartridges.

Did you use the disk or Windows plug and play driver vs the current driver through the Brother website (Preferred)?
Current firmware? Be careful because this might cause more issues with aftermarket toner.
Go to Settings > Devices > Printers& Scanners > Manage (Brother printer) > Printer Properties > Advanced tab. check/change spooling settings and/or try printing directly to printer.
Just a few things that popped into my head. The pause is strange. I've printed multiple 200+ page duplex documents on my Brother 2270DW printer and it never paused.
I purchased one and had it shipped to me, but when it arrived, it was missing the toner and drum, and had 15 pages printed on the counter. When I tried to register it, it was already registered to somebody else.

I would love to get a model that has Ethernet port, as I believe WiFi often has problems with the printer going to sleep and not waking up for printing.

Yeah, I'm wondering why it isn't coming back?
Ideally, a printer like this one (except it uses 600 series toner) connected to a raspberry pi running print server software. It will be ethernet and wireless, both.

cause some people buy that canon POS at the same price.
and yes, its a POS.
have tried 2 that have died in less than a month.. no joke.
bought a second hand brother all in one years ago, and its been solid
That all in context, this SPECIFIC model printer is THE printer that you want to buy for traditional black and white printing. It's a perfect workhorse with seamless wireless connectivity through wifi, bluetooth direct, or wifi-direct. It's got installation software that you don't need to install (because this is 2024, Hewlett Packard!), sips ink (which can be replaced with cheap and extendible clones off Amazon or for $10 at your local Walgreens photo department), and is one of the few model offering duplex printing (it will flip the page over and print on the back for you) automatically from the same normal page tray.
At $99, this printer is a bargain. Walmart printer stock can sit around few longer than most big-box stores, so I'd actually just use this deal to pricematch to Best Buy or something.
For COLOR PRINTING, I recommend the original Canon Color imageCLASS MF656Cdw Wireless Color All-in-One Laser. It's the last printer you'll buy (had mine for 6 year so far) and it's got all the bells and whistles you need without the extra bitcoin mining or wifi snooping you'd expect from most of the 'subscription' printers. Never needs repairs, never jams, and feels like it's the last $250-$300 printer you'll ever need to buy. I have both this Canon for color/HD photos and the Brother for B&W
However personally I would recommend that if you plan to network it, you get one with ethernet as backup. Brother firmware updates stopped pretty soon after buying my last one. I am sure the WiFi is vulnerable to several attacks these days. Luckily it also has ethernet though so I can use that.
(also, in before someone says "you can use USB and share it through another computer or the router's USB ports" -- yes, I know. Many people do not know how to manage that though, and/or ethernet gives additional range over max length USB cables for fringe placement)
One reason I only recommend brother laser printers is because they are not only super reliable, they also work great with just about any aftermarket toner brands, with no constant warnings about it either.
This one is a great deal that prints fast. If you're willing to spend a little more, you can get one with MFC functionality: copier, flatbed scanner, auto feeder.
