For an extra $100, it definitely is worth it for the M3 Air.

You get dual monitor support, a faster processor, better read/write speeds on a base model over the M2 Air, faster Wi-Fi, and better mics.

Think about it over the life of the laptop, $100 isn't as much over the course of 5-7 years. If you can swing it, I would spend the extra $100.

Agreed.

Why apple is dropping prices this low, I have to say economy is changing... Demand is slowing

Does open box have same warranty as new ones from Apple? Can we add Apple Care?
At the time of purchase, there is an option to buy the Apple warranty for the laptop otherwise I assume you can call Apple to request the expiration warranty time.

Apple tracks sales dates of their hardware, and resellers are supposed to give that information back to Apple. If they don't, you can provide Apple with your receipt showing the purchase date/time/etc details, and they'll start the warranty then, assuming new hardware.

It's not just about today though. The NAND differences alone will make things better with read/write speeds. Not that Macs are meant for gaming, but with the recent showcases of AAA games coming to Mac, some casual users may get the itch to play the occasional game or two which could be gate kept by M3 or newer down the road.

Unless $ is really tight or someone has an absolutely strict budget, It's not worth worrying as much over $100 over the course of a device used for 5+ years.

Think about it this way, brand aside, does it make sense to pay $100 less for a 2 year old laptop vs the latest/greatest? The M2 base is handicapped by slower NAND chips alone.
I agree the improvements are meaningful but most MBA owners are using them for Facebook and instagram, emails, Netflix, some word processing, and so on. People using it for that kind of stuff aren't really going to notice higher nand speeds or the m3 speed boost

True. there is potential of apple maybe getting into gaming space. just for that the m3 chip is worth it.

Now that I think about it, in June I'll probably get m3 MBA. BTW this is for high school student, so in that context would m3 be worth? I have not used any of the m2 or m3 machines(ive only used m1 so far), so I dont really know.

No. Mac are almost the same price as a decent windows machine now. In the past it used to be that Mac's were more expensive than windows laptops. But that's not really true anymore

And when would I notice disk speeds when gaming?

When would I notice the 15%-ish speed bump the M3 gives when gaming?

On a Mac? Gaming? Smilie

If money's tight, save the $100 and get the M2. If it's not, get the M3. But in either case, most people will not be able to see any difference in normal use.
Macs aren't gaming centric at all, but Apple has been hyping up their silicon for AAA games recently, like Resident Evil Village.

Knowing how Apple gate keeps stuff, wouldn't surprise me if M3 has some additional games available that M2 or M1 won't.

Just something to think about for the average casual user. Someone might want to do something small like that on their Mac.

Read write speeds help with data transfers too.

Down the road who knows? Probably better to future proof for $100 more with a base machine should people choose to do so?

It's very little over 5 years. Better read write speeds help with data transfers alone.

I would say go for the M3 Air since it could get good use beyond HS should college be on the horizon.

For basic use, M1 to M3 isn't as big of a leap as it is from Intel to M1, but if someone spends good $, might as well get the most longevity out of it for sure.

M2 is still a 2 year old laptop with a lot of life left in it. But since M3 is so new, it's going to get more updates down the road.

Apple's lineup is so convoluted with a 2022 iPad Air using the same processor as a 2020 MacBook Air, so it's tough to say how much time the M2 Air updates will be around.

I agree, and if I were buying for myself I'd probably get the newer one. But apple laptops have such long lifespans that I think most buyers would be just as happy with the m1 and m2 as the m3. So it just depends how much of a hard hit the extra hundred/few hundred dollars are to someone. If the added cost is a stretch at all and the laptop will just be for casual use, stick with the cheaper slightly older ones

Please point to a game that works on M3 but not M2. Until then, that's a theoretical guess on your part. Pretty much by definition, Apple's going to want to make sure all the "small" stuff works on as many machines as possible because their market penetration is so tiny.

Enough with the r/w nonsense. Nobody cares, and unless you write to a TB4 disk all day, neither should you.

The real difference is about 10-15% per generation in CPU and GPU. That's it. It's not worth getting excited about.

Check MacWorld for the differences in the models; it's almost nil between M2 and M3 MBA, for example, except that 10-15% faster CPU/GPU. If money's tight, get the cheaper one. If it's not, get the newer one for an additional year or so of MacOS support.
