google streamer is honestly pretty garbage, they really dropped the ball
old processor, not as much support, doubled the price from the chromecast,
like WTF google?

It was same price during Prime week less than a month ago.

Maybe they're realizing they need to discount this now due to its ancient hardware.

Anything Google touches turns to crap.. they will force everything through the cloud and make it run like garbage like they always do. Check out Google graveyard for more reference. Personally wouldn't buy anything they make ever again.

How does that make sense? It's easy to stream at the highest possible quality in Plex and Kodi. Especially if you're streaming locally.
It upscales it to 4k. So if you are streaming a 1080 stream on a 4k, it will upscale it to 4k better than your TV upscaler.

I have it and I love it, but it is showing its age.

It lacks certain features newer devices have and the AI upscaling just isn't that good compared to what Nvidia is doing elsewhere with their products. Unless you watch a lot of animation, the upscaling can over sharpen somethings on real life tv and make it look poor. Luckily, it is easy to switch off.

That bein said, it isn't worth this price anymore. 70-100 sure, 170? No.

I've been using Shields since the original. I still have an OG 2015 model in my kids' playroom and it works fine. I am running this one on my main TV and it's still fast, responsive, and plays everything. I used to have my Plex Media Server running on it but then Plex pushed out an update a few months ago that broke it so I switched to running it on my mini gaming PC.

It's a tough decision at this price given the older hardware but the only thing comparable is Apple TV 4K and that's about the same price.

The UI on this is laggy/sluggish nightmare. I barely use it. No issues with my Apple TV 4K.

I just got one of these on Prime Day. Way better than my Fire Cube. Faster and doesn't freeze up like the fire cube. No annoying ads like the fire cube. The remote is solid, it basically has all of the same functionality as the best Amazon remote including backlight and it beeps when you lose it, bonus there's an app that lets you reprogram the buttons.

The newest version of the Firestick Max has been on sale from BestBuy for $35. It will pass through Dolby True-HD Atmos and DTS:X. I have the newest Apple TV and the newest Firestick Max. I only use the Firestick to play movies with True-HD Atmos and DTS:X audio. I use my Apple TV for everything else. I only have one app installed on the Firestick, the newest version of Kodi. If you encounter buffering playing blu-ray remuxes over your home network with the Firestick, you can increase the SMB chunk size to 1MB under Settings>Servies>SMB expert settings within Kodi.

Are you an apple user for other things? I've been thinking about getting and Apple TV but it would be our only Apple product in the house. I wasn't sure if you need to be fully in the Apple ecosystem for it to make sense.

I think Xbox Series S would be better deal.
The Xbox does actually support a ton of codes and passthrough but the Plex app is notoriously bad on it compared to the shield. From what I have read, the shield and pure android clients have the best support as Plex clients.

Anyone know how to get this to work with Xfinity Stream? I have been trying for months with sideloading different APKs, but it keeps saying Casting is not allow, It works just fine with Fire TV Stick. why it doesnt work with Nvidia?
Nope. I keep a fire stick hooked up to my main TV that my shield is also on just for Xfinity stream tv. I've tried and the update to stream app a couple years ago completely blocked stream from working on the shield.

I really want to love my expenditure on this, but more and more I find a fire stick is almost better because it actually works with everything except the one thing I bought the shield to do perfectly - play mkv with high audio fidelity (e.g. trueHd). Paramount can't run worth a damn. Hbo isn't perfect but usually works. AppleTV app randomly resets when launching a show about 50% of the time. If firestick could stream mkv from my file server with great audio I'd have benched the shield.

Yes, and like I said, that makes zero sense. It's easy to stream Kodi and Plex at 4k. You must be new to this.

Or maybe they are just running down the inventory and getting out of this media streaming business altogether

With the billions they make on AI chips, this business is no longer appealing and they have not refreshed this lineup either. And no, i don't think new version of Shield TV is coming. They have bigger fish to fry these days

It is if you have Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers, a competent receiver and don't want compressed Atmos audio that the Apple 4k outputs.
