I'm sure it's been mentioned and buried but extended warranty benefit goes away next month which sucks
Uhh yeah I have an Amex, this is not true lol
I'm sure citi fought hard in the bidding process to beat Amex to get the Costco account. Part of the terms were probably to offer better benefits for the customer....

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere in the previous 17 pages, but does anyone know what happens to rewards accumulated on the old Amex card on June 19th when the old card gets automatically cancelled? Didn't see any mention of that in the FAQ for the new card.

Or, put another way, they recouped just $1 billion on their 13.9 billion loss Wink

The article you linked to points to an overall grim picture for AmEx:

-Loss of as much as 8% of total cardholder spending volume in 2015
-Expectation that AmEx will cut $1 billion in expenses this year to bolster profit margins
-They may be forced to lower their MT fee, which is what they rely more on to make money off of (vs. interest/balances)
-Weaker bargaining power as it comes to MT fees

So long term, AmEx may come out OK, but short term, it's going to be rough--especially if management doesn't prove to be top notch as Buffett expects.
And, that $1B recoup is merely what AmEx said they'd hoped to get, not what they actually got, which was surely likely to be less...

Ignore the "you get a bonus booking through our portal!" stuff.

You want to transfer the points to travel partners (hotels and airlines) where you get WAY more value out of them.

For example I booked a business class ticket from Boston to Dublin last year... this is a $3000 ticket if paying cash.

Even with a 20% bonus it would cost 250,000 UR via the portal. A value of only 1.2 cents a point

But by transferring only 50,000 UR to Avios I could buy the ticket using Avios

A value of 6 cents a point (or about 5.6 cents a point after taxes)

Note- that same plane ticket is now like 62.5k avios because they changed the reward chart... but that's still almost 5 cents a point.

The reason the values between the 3 point systems (UR, MR, and TU) varies a bit depending on how you travel is that each has different sets of airlines and hotels they can transfer to...some overlap (for example UR>MR for avios because they transfer 1:1 with UR, but 1:0.8 for MR) and some don't overlap (TU has no domestic airlines for example)
I've never used my points in Chase UR. Never found a better way than convert to $1 each. I do need to travel international at least once or twice a year. I dont follow your explanation though. Could you please point me to where you get the comparisons from?

It's in the Rewards section of the FAQ:

Quote :
What happens to the rewards I've earned on my Costco card from American Express?
You won't lose any of the cash back rewards you've already earned from your Costco card from American Express. Rewards that were not previously distributed to you will be transferred automatically to your new card on June 20, 2016, so you won't lose any of the rewards you've already earned. Your February 2017 cash back rewards coupon from Citi will include cash back rewards earned on your Costco card from American Express during 2016 that were not previously distributed to you by American Express.

If your Costco card from American Express earned Membership Rewards® points, these points will not transfer to your new card. Contact American Express with any questions.

Say a RT flight to Asia is $1200 for economy and $4000 for business. If you book it through UR site, it would cost you 96,000 for economy or 320,000 for business. Now if you take the same flight but move it to say United, the same RT flights would be 80,000 miles (or 80,000 UR points) for economy and 160,000 miles...

Best redemption is on business class trips.

Update: thought about this a bit more.

I have the AmEx Blue Cash Preferred, which is 3% gas. I also have the Citi Double Cash (Mastercard), which is 2% on everything. I also have a Chase Freedom (Visa), which is 1% on everything.

So in comparison, the Citi Costco is only 1% more on gas (4% Citi Costco vs. 3% AmEx Preferred), 1% more on restaurants (3% Citi Costco vs. 2% Citi Double Cash), and 1% more on Costco (2% Citi Costco vs. 1% Chase Freedom or any other Visa that is now accepted at Costco).

1% gas, 1% Costco, 1% restaurants? Probably not worth opening another card. Maybe good for some, but not if you already have a credit card arsenal. I will give them credit, though, as it is still an upgrade, however slight.
33% more, 50% more, and 100% more.....slight lol

I dont see an option to transfer my UR points to an airline in my account. Is it card specific? I would need to look through the terms. Crap! EEK!

I've liked my AmEx card for the benefits they give than the cash back. Better cashback is always welcome, but I would need to get another AmEx now for keeping its benefits and the extended warranties etc. They aren't even offering a good deal ona new card to entice the customers they will lose! Just the Blue Cash. Mad

I'm not sure if it has been asked here on the thread or if it is indicated on the website somewhere. Does anybody know if Citi will keep the credit limit I have on my Amex card?

.... and its not that you are getting a new credit line, Citi will take over the credit line from AmEx. You basically do nothing to get this card (if you already had the Costco AmEx card). I'll take this, but will miss the AmEx benefits Frown

You don't get 5% at penfed anymore since they devalued their points system.

1 point used to be worth 1¢, but they are now only worth 0.85¢ per point. This means this card actually gives you the following rates:

Gas: 4.25x cash back
Groceries: 2.55x cash back
All other purchases: 0.85x cash back
Penfed has many rewards cards but you are referring to one of the 2 5% gas rewards cards

The Platinum Rewards Visa Signature® Card (the one u refer to) is 5x points on gas. This has been changed to 0.85¢ per point. If you have this card you are 100% correct.

Platinum Cash Rewards Visa® Card is their other card. This card was changed recently as well to be more variable. The standard card is 3% First Year $0 then $25 fee. The Plus card needs one of the following to activate the 5% and no fee.
Qualify for Plus Cash Rewards by opening up one of the following:

Active checking account with direct deposit ($250 min.)
Equity Loan or Equity Line of Credit
Money Market Certificate or IRA Certificate
Thrifty Credit Service
Mortgage
Personal Line of Credit
Installment loan
Money Market Savings Accounts

This is the card i have, but i also have my Mortgage with them to activate the 5%. Many people will be effect by these (crappy)changes, but a true 5% card with no limits does still exist.
