VR-Tek Windows VR Glasses, FHD Resolution - 2560x1440 + $20 Steam GC
$29.99

VR-Tek Windows VR Glasses, Ultra HD Resolution 1440x1400 + $20 Steam GC
$44.99

There was a previous thread HERE.

The difference is the cheaper one shares a screen so its less resolution and no IPD adjustment since it is only one screen. The advantage is its only $10 bucks effectively since you get a $20 Steam Giftcard. Even the better headset only comes out to $25. Both come with a BlueTooth controller as well...heh

True, these were cheaper two months ago, but really... if you even a slight curiosity to VR, this is the cheapest price of admission. Reviews sway from horrible to worth it for the price.

I own a Rift and Odyssey+, but I still bought one. If its good enough for Elite: Dangerous, its an insane value.
https://www.walmart.com/co/VR-Tek.../903059996

Oddly enough Walmart reduces the price of the headset when tabulating the total so you pay less in tax and thus less overall with the extra Steam GC than with just the headset itself.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

To answer any questions:

Is this an actual VR headset or do I need a phone to put in it?
It is an actual VR headset with all the electronics built in.

Does it have motion controllers and what about the sensors?
It has no motion controllers and it has no sensors other than the ones built into the headset themselves. You must play stationary either standing or sitting, but you dont need to physically move your body.

So then how is this VR?
Its VR as much as Oculus GO and DayDream and GearVR are concerned though using your PC should have way better graphics.

What games can it play?
You can use SteamVR natively. But really you should only be playing games that can be played with a controller, or external device like a racing wheel or flight hotas. So should be perfect for racing games and flight sims.

What about movies and ...stuff?
Yes.

I heard its got bad motion blur, only runs at 60hz and makes users wanna throw up?
Could be, spend the 10 or 25 dollars and find out yourselves... but you should know a new software update was released recently and at least in the case of the 1440 version the frame-rate goes to 90-120hz now.

I do use Steam so the gift card will be used, but I don't know if I should risk getting this for $10 or $25?
Then don't and stop burying this thread because you're too chicken to spend the price of a lunch on something potentially awesome.

Big Grin

Additional questions:

So what it the difference between the two - why is the power spec'd version more expensive?
It isn't. The 1440 x 1440 version is per eyeball, 2 times 1440 x 1440. The single 2560 x 1440 is a single screen split into two. Effectively 1280 x 1440 per eye, but since its the same physical screen you can't adjust for IPD which is how far apart your eyes are.

Okay, so what is IPD and why is it worth $15 more here?
IPD is the distance from your eye to your other eye. In the low-end model you cannot adjust this as they share the same screen. You will still be able to see, but depending on how far off your eyes are dead center from the default position it can cause various degrees of irritation and fatigue. Having dual screen in the pricier version allows this IPD adjustment making it literally easier on the eyes.

Back to the controls and games... what exactly can I play?
This comes with a wireless adapter as well as a wireless controller. Go into Steam and search for all their VR games. Go to the filters and check "Full Controller Support". You'll get a list of games you can use with a controller - those are the ones you can use with this system. Along with any game that can use custom controls like a Hotas for flight sims or a racing wheel for racing games - those should all work great too.
examples include: Elite: Dangerous, Resident Evil 7, Lucky Tales, Skyrim VR, Dirt Rally

What about support, I'm not much a techno-geek and might need help.
Sorry... It sucks, but part of the cheap cost is the lack of premium stuff like proper support. I hate to say it, but if you need more help than what Google can provide, and/or have high expectations for a flawless setup... its best you just skip this.

Are you a shill?
I could be if this product turns out to be good for what I expect... if not, this will get flamed to hell from me any time someone else posts it Big Grin
2560 total on a single screen. 1440 version is 1440 PER EYE.
Any source on 90-120hz?

Nice, seems there are quite a few places this SteamDriver folder gets dumped to.
For me, messing with the default.vrsettings in this folder seemed to click:
C:\Program Files (x86)\HoloView\SteamDriver\vrtek\resources\settings

If I change model Number to v5.0 (originally v1.0), then steamvr settings shows V5.0
https://i.postimg.cc/d3qF2nKR/screenshot-133.png

The one in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\drivers\vrtek\resources\settings\
didn't do anything when I tried changing the values yesterday.

Going to try messing with the distortion values in that file next

EDIT: The distortion values in that file definitely do something. I set ipd to 0.8 (default 0.063), launched bigscreen VR, and the renderer behaved as you would expect for someone with eyes floating next to their heads. SteamVR seems to need a restart for the new settings to take effect.

The "distortionR/G/B_K1/2/3" and "ZoomWidth"/"ZoomHeight" settings however are only active if you switch "adjust_distortion" to true (it's false by default).

When the "adjust_distortion" is false, I think the renderer uses the default values for distortionR/G/B_K1/2/3 and ZoomWidth/ZoomHeight (which is 0.7 for all the K1s and 0.7 ZoomWidth and Zoomheight).

With these default settings (at least for me) there is some slightly fisheye warping in the corners and chromatic abberation that worsens as you get closer to the edges of the display (blue is pulled towards the center), going to play around with the values to at least correct the abberation.

I've managed to correct the chromatic aberration by playing around with the distortion settings (you have to adjust, save, and reopen steamVR after making adjustments).

If you disable steamVR home (steam vr settings) then you end up in the compositor view every time you open steam VR, the endless grey void with black lines everywhere. It's a good scene to do the calibration.

Here is what I found the different distortion values to be doing:
(file is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\HoloView\SteamDriver\vrtek\resources\settings )

*K1: 'pulls in' a color globally, the corners are pulled in more than the edges.
*K2: 'pulls in' a color, most of the effect is applied to the image as it crosses mid-radius
*K3: 'pulls in' a color, most of the effect is applied at the very edges and corners of the image
negative K values don't do anything.

R_K1/2/3 pulls in BLUE, leaving Red behind
G_K1/2/3 pulls in PURPLE, leaving Green behind
B_K/1/2/3 pulls in YELLOW, leaving Blue behind

ZoomHeight and ZoomWidth are vertical and horizontal FOV. Closer to 0 means narrower FOV. Max value is 0.85, any more and black bars get rendered. These can be set independently. Realistically I would recommend 0.8 or so if you wanted the highest FOV.

IPD is inter-pupillary distance. Here is seems to control strength of the 3D effect. eg, set it to 0 and both screens render the same thing, so looking at VR is like looking at a TV in your living room, no depth.

Default values: 0.7 for all K1s, 0.0 for all K2s and K3s, 0.7 for ZoomHeight/Width, 0.063 for ipd. IPD adjustments are rather subtle, I changed mine but don't notice a big difference. Adjust_dist is false by default. Set this to true if you want your custom distortion settings to be applied.

Here is my profile, adjusted only K1 values. This only fixes the chromatic aberration for me but I'm not sure if it will work for anyone else since the lenses can vary and the image depends on position of eyes.

Code:
{
    "driver_config" : {
    "enable" : true,
    "driver_version" : "V1.0.5.20181225",
    "brander":"vrtek",
    "serialNumber" : "JDI",
    "modelNumber" : "V1.0 - Aberration FIX v1",
    "adjust_distortion":true,
    "distortionR_K1":0.693,
    "distortionR_K2":0.0,
    "distortionR_K3":0.0,
    "distortionG_K1":0.735,
    "distortionG_K2":0.0,
    "distortionG_K3":0.0,
    "distortionB_K1":0.795,
    "distortionB_K2":0.0,
    "distortionB_K3":0.0,
    "ZoomWidth":0.7,
    "ZoomHeight":0.7,
    "ipd":0.063
   }
}
Overwrite the default.vrsettings in C:\Program Files (x86)\HoloView\SteamDriver\vrtek\resources\settings with this.

Cool, will have to take a look later.

I haven't used steamvr-undistort yet. It was suggested by someone. Also didn't know it asked for motion controls. I am unsure if Keyboard and Mouse or a regular controller will work or not too.

Keep up the great work.

We need a proper place for other users and geeks who own a VR-Tek WVR3 and such to brainstorm. Maybe at the MTBS3D site or Reddit or something.

Course this thread is working decently for now. Stick Out Tongue

So, took hours of experimentation, but finally:
- chromatic aberration corrected
- image warping/fisheye corrected

see posts above.
values changed: all K1 and K2s. For some strange reason the "distortionG_K3" value is completely ignored. I was trying to work around it but discovered that adjusting K2 is all you need to fix the fisheye.

This may not work as well for you as it does for me.
Code:
{
    "driver_config" : {
    "enable" : true,
    "driver_version" : "V1.0.5.20181225",
    "brander":"vrtek",
    "serialNumber" : "JDI",
    "modelNumber" : "V1.0 Aberr+warp fix 4 k1k2",
    "adjust_distortion":true,
    "distortionR_K1":0.650,
    "distortionR_K2":1.193,
    "distortionR_K3":0.0,
    "distortionG_K1":0.735,
    "distortionG_K2":1.031,
    "distortionG_K3":0.0,
    "distortionB_K1":0.805,
    "distortionB_K2":1.137,
    "distortionB_K3":0.0,
    "ZoomWidth":0.825,
    "ZoomHeight":0.825,
    "ipd":0.063
   }
}
Going between the stock profile and this one is night and day. I can't even explain. The aberration on the default settings is pretty obvious but the warping, oh man. I didn't even realize how bad it was until I compared with the fixed profile. The factory settings could have been way better tuned.

That said, for less than 50$ this headset has no business being so good. LOL
If only I could get 80hz to run

Thank you for at least creating a starting basis on improving the Headset that others can then add their own personal tweaks for them as well.

Would be sweet to have some type of gui tweaking program.

Adding in for those that want to or did dump these because of the 80hz being too low... The new Rift S announcement said that Rift 1.5 (basically, calling it how it is) will be 80hz panels not 90hz. So thats proof that those here running 80hz aren't lying to you about it being good enough.
Yes and the Rift S is only one panel so it's closer to the WVR2 model (Which it's been reported is 80hz according to SteamVR.) Also no IPD adjustments too.

Could try sending Emdoor an English / China translated E-mail on these issues: [email protected]

And call Direkt-Tek since they seem to be slow responding to E-mail. 1‑888‑999‑1675 during the week before 4pm PST.
Yeah just call and ask for a senior tech or tech in general. Let them know of the Nvidia bug.

Point them to this thread, offer to Email them a link with some quotes of people with these issues.

Maybe also share @Margroloc's findings if he doesn't mind.

Ask the company to consider making a Discord so users of the VR Headsets can chat about them and techs can chime in too.

^^ So much useful information I'm grossed out that margroloc is not drowning in Reps.

Definitely the most information I could find in English after poring through reddit nonsense. I only wish I hadn't read this thread chronologically, since margoloc was so far ahead with config files and effects.

I have a brand-new Win10 x64 (GTX 1060 3GB) rig and an image I can roll back to on NVME in about 5 minutes -- SO... let's hear some aggressive suggestions, and I'll test-em out!

All I've found so far, that I didn't see mentioned, is that if I turn off Direct Mode in SteamVR I see 80Hz instead of 60Hz when I run a System Report. Could be a clue for somebody smarter than me also trying to solve the NVIDIA 60Hz ceiling.

Call the company. Ask to speak with a senior tech. Tell them the issue & offer to link this thread. Wink

Thanks to everyone here for all of the great info. My headset is working great and I'm enjoying it, but I think I've tracked down a cheap Gear VR so soon I'll be doing the transplant another user mentioned. I'll report back if I manage to go through with it. If anyone has any tips for how to remove the lenses, it'd be appreciated.

Just use the cheap phone VR boxes and find some with aspherical PMMA lenses. I will report. Imho the WVR2 is better in FOV and clarity, I hate the X2 dual LCD on the WVR3, the pixel grid is distracting. The WVR2 is more consistent like my Magicsee M1 Pro and other VR units.

What's your opinion on the WVR3 and WVR2's (Emdoor site says 60hz but I heard SteamVR reports 80hz?) 80hz panels?

Check Second Hand stores. You'd be surprised the amount of Headsets for a couple bucks. There is a teardown a few pages back.

Forget about the WVR3. The lenses are fixed on the LCD panels and they adjust with the IPD sliders in a crooked way / diagonally. They are cheap, the IPD is not even and level within the viewing plane. The FOV is smaller too on the WVR3 units. I just bought 4 of the the WVR2 units and took out the LCD combo + modded them into my own headset with IPD + added aspherical 45mm lenses. I also hate the pixel shape on these dual separate micro LCDs.

I prefer the 2K single display with my own added/modded IPD for better focus control and eye separation managment. I would just rip the screen out of the WVR2 units and make your own goggles. Get true aspherical lenses too. It is worth it to have IPD and proper lenses for the WVR2 models.

My real recommendation for a truly versatile VR is this. Find the AIO headsets with HDMI inputs (Now discontinued) that have fully removable lens sockets, The Magicsee M1 Pro, is great with the VR5 knockoff lenses. The engineer team for the knock off ironically made true aspherical lenses with their sub-par headsets. The actual Magicsee M1 and M1 Pro have terrible lenses with blurring until you change them to aspherical type. The WVR2 is the same type of deal. The WVR3 is not worth it. They both run 80hz. Truth is they do not use a low persistence display, so this is not even an important number.

You need a 5.5" inch 2K screen that has the scanning backlight running at an interpolated 240hz to have ZERO blur. This is the only option for NO blur. The frame rate of the game is important, but that interpolation of a 60hz signal is how you remove blur from any LCD. A headset with that screen will cost a bit. Razer had one on the 1080p OSVR HDK1. I have yet to see a 2K screen with (240hz interpolation) on any devkit or budget VR headset.

I own about 30+ all in one headsets. I used them for research and dev work. The Nibiru platform is amazing guys. The HDMI input support was unlike anything I have seen. Sadly, no one understands it and it was updated so much the last 2 years since releases. I TRIED to help these Nibiru/Chinese devs improve hardware and firmware for the devices released almost 2 years ago. I have assisted them in hardware design changes and helped the market AVOID some of the worst AIO headsets they would have released otherwise.

The Nibiru team finally listened to my constant firmware suggestions and the HDMI input port lag is almost under 30ms now. This applies to ALL the AIO headsets too. 1080p and the 2K models. They never released a 4K model due to costs, now the AIO headsets come without the HDMI port too. You can see a blank patch of empty plastic on all the I/O for any current AIO Nibiru based VR headset.

The WVR2 unit cannot compare to the built in hassle free Magicsee M1 Pro with latest firmware. Adding proper lenses and the latest HDMI input firmware in place is a must, I have 120 FOV and 28-34ms in HDMI lag. This is just like a decent HDMI TV. The WVR2 units are really the best value if you take them apart and understand that 60hz/80hz is the best you are getting in such simple LCD tech. Those 240hz interpolated panels aint cheap.

Hope this helps.

If you guys want more info let me know, good luck out there with getting a good VR for the cheap! I do support it! CV1 and VIVE are lacking big time. We really need 4K and 240hz interpolated type panels.
