Those are basically different ways to get more internet coverage in the house. Spare the technical details, unless Ethernet is available or using the electrical lines in the house with special complex signal processing for carrying communication between the wireless access points, one will need to sacrifice radio bandwidth to serve as the backbone. Newer technology can use higher frequency and will provide higher bandwidth but may also reduce the physical range. Newer technology can also use multiple frequencies to delivered higher speed to more devices. The discussion here is asking if the money spent on the extender will be worth awhile when compared to other solutions.
Good deal but these things always throttle my internet. It could literally be right next to the router and it'll still cut down the wifi speed. Not sure if just me but doesn't seem worth it
That's how range extender work. Best approach would be to go mesh, powerline, or a new router if performance is a major concern.

Question: I have an Orbi mesh system throughout the house - I already own this product, will placing this in the garage help or hurt our fiber internet speeds?

On the netgear ones you have an option to receive on one frequency and send on another exclusively. E.g. you receive internet signal on 2.4ghz and then you send the signal out on 5ghz. This could greatly increase the speed. Not sure if this one has that option but if it does, take advantage as it basically doubles the speed.

This one offers it to. Just enable only 2.4 for extended and only 5Ghz for backhaul

don't think these are worth it unless it's being used for some iot device that's in some very remote location that doesn't need a good internet connection. i've had a 802.11n version of this, and while it was good at first, the internet speed is cut in half while connected to it, and signal quality degraded over a period of two years. at that point i switched to mesh combo and never looked back.

Hi use this in the basement. I have it configured for 5G for connecting to the main network and 2.4 G for the extended network I have AT&T one gigabit fiber. When I used to be in the basement used to get about 8 Mb. And now I get about 60 Mb.
In the main two levels of the house I get about 600 Mb

What if I just want to get WiFi in my garage to use a MyQ (smart garage opener)? What's the cheapest and/or easiest?
I used this for exactly that purpose. The house wifi could hit my phone just fine, but it couldn't get up in to the garage rafters where the openers are with the doors closed. I bought one of these extenders and stuck it in an outlet in the house closest to the garage (it didn't work putting it in the garage, same issue with the range). Connected the MyQ to the new SSID from the extender and everything works perfectly.

This older version is prettier and better made, it feels like at least.

Do it right, get mesh or better access points from you main router.
Since different people have different needs, a mesh system for some people might be overkill. I've attempted a router + extender before (and then later on got Google WiFi), and it's awful if you're walking around your house with a cell phone because the WiFi does not smoothly transition from one network to the other. So if that's something you need to be able to do, then yes I agree, mesh or wired access points are the only ways to do it right.

However, if you have a stationary object in the dead zone, such as a Roku stick or a computer, and that's the ONLY thing you need WiFi on, then you can probably get by with a cheap extender.

So many many comments and they all just basically said this thing isn't great, speeds get reduced, if you're looking to simply 'extend' the reach of your WiFi for something like garage or doorbell THEN it's fine.

If you want speed to be maintained over the larger distance, don't buy this and apparently buy a mesh network (without anyone actually giving a single link to recommended or best choices etc).

Overall I'm very upset with most of these comments, wasted my time.
