Not trying to troll, anyone know when we'll start seeing wifi 6e routers? Is it worthwhile to wait?

I have the AX86U, which is a bit higher-end. I'm not super convinced it's worth waiting. I tried rocking the full 160Mhz width, but the thing is it cuts your transmit power to 25% of a 40Mhz width so signal strength goes to hell. I settled on 80Mhz, and there's plenty of channels for that if you have access to DFS on your router.

The advantage of 6e is more channels, but if it's still 25% power your range will still be terrible.

Even with just 80Mhz width, I benchmarked over 500Mbit/s on my iPhone. That's plenty in my book.

Range hasn't been improve too much mostly speed has been the talk. Although range may vary per router as usual. If range is your only concern mesh is the way to go

I was about to upgrade my network to WiFi 6 a few months back and WiFi 6e started hitting the shelves. I decided to wait as I don't necessarily need the bump to 6 but future proofing would be nice. The more traction 6e gets the cheaper 6 will become

I haven't kept up on WiFi specs since I got busy with life, what's the range on these? Are they better able to handle a two-story set up compared to old equipment?

I tried doing DFS but I must get periodic interference / channel switching. It's great when it works but I had to go back to auto channels to keep xcloud running smooth.

Can anyone suggest between this AX68U vs AX82U vs AX86U. I know the AX86U is far more powerful but is it worth the $100 more? And as for the AX82U that is a sweet spot for price (currently at $200) but it doesn't support merlin - how bad is that (i.e. what tangible things does merlin add these days?)

Higher frequency = more bandwidth but worse range

i'm in the waiting camp.
my 5yo ac3100 with merlin hosts two dozen devices in a 2200sqft space like a champ,
so i'd rather spend this $160 on more HDD's for my NAS till 6e is out and settles down.

just look at 5G on USA cell phones - it's low band trash every budget phone has now.
don't get suckered into a meaningless upgrade cycle just to give these lazy pigs profit
and reward their meaningless marketing.

I have the same router as an AIMesh node (MoCA backhaul) and also get 450-500 Mbps on my WiFi 5 Pixel phone. From what I've read, 6e is good for the same room as your router but that's it. 500 Mbps is plenty for most people.

Lot of good info here. I tried a low end Wifi6 version of the netgear router and I didn't see much difference. What I'd like to buy is new google mesh router with wifi6/6e support.

Have only tried DD WRT but I see lot of folks mentioning merlin. What would be the typical use case for merlin? More customization options?

Honestly, I'm not on gigabit but having a few cheaper to link access points and an Omada controller has been a godsend. So speedy, coverage from my backyard, basement, to 3rd story attic.

High speed and no transmission power doesn't make sense for 99% of consumers. Maybe there is a NAS use case, but at that point plug in.

I am excited that newer generations of Wi-Fi will force better adoption of 10gbE.

That depends on what you have now - if you have ac wave 2 (ASUS RT-AC86U) then no need to upgrade to WiFi 6 nor 6E (you won't notice any difference).
If you have ac wave 1 (ASUS RT-AC68U), then update to ac wave 2 or above (6).
The smartest buy is ASUS RT-AX58U, it uses the same WiFi chipset as their highest end models.
WiFi 6E will only help if you live in very crowded WiFi environment.
Use Merlin firmware with Asus routers.
Source: I've upgraded my ASUS RT-AC68U to ASUS RT-AX58U, have multiple WiFi 6 devices.
