So I ordered 2 of these drives last week when I saw the deal, They arrived today in a 12"x16"x9" cardboard box and look at how they were packaged.... No protection other that a 3' string of plastic packaging No Wrap on the Drives at all... Just thrown in the box where I am sure UPS carefully handled them! (yea, right)

Last week I had to return a drive for warranty and they have a specific Packaging requirement or, the drives are returned.... I guess NewEgg didn't have those instructions when they sent me these....

The customer service person I first spoke to didn't know what a hard drive was, (nor did they care, Not their Job).... had no idea why I was upset.... I just have to ask anyone here on this tread see this as a problem? I have been in the computer business for over 30 years I have never encountered anything like this

Does anyone else see the problem or am I just being too hard on them?

You are justified. Computer hardware is obviously meant to withstand wear and tear, but despite this they're still delicate and require caution and care when handling.

For all you know, the disks could be tarnished from rough handling.

A little common sense would tell you that you do not throw a couple of drives in to a HUGE Box and ship them from California to Tennessee ... Let alone not wrapping them in protective individual packages with bubble packaging. I have about 20 drives up and running in our multi NAS set up and there is no way I would install these drives .... From Day 1 of my purchasing drives I knew you do not drop them... My guess they were tossed and turned, banging around in that box for the 2000 mile ride... What was sad is the two people I spoke to in customer service had no idea or sense of this could be a problem in their voice... Both of them told me that they never have seen a hard drive out of a computer.... Go figure!

But, notice in WDs instructions on how to return a defective drive back to WD ... I am sure that no one at Newegg has ever looked at this:

Please follow the packaging instructions below:
Place the internal drive in ESD (Electro Static Discharge) Bag
Wrap the bag with 2 inches of bubble wrap or non-movable foam cushioning
Place in sturdy cardboard box. Do not use chipboard, as it is not strong enough to withstand the rigors of transit. Please make sure the corrugated carton is free from defects and is structurally sound. Please print out the RMA Label and affix on the box. Write the Return Material Authorization number on outside packaging, on three sides in bold print.
Image
When shipping multiple items, each item must be, packed as above, hard drive must not directly touch each other and cannot move inside the packaging. All products must be, packed in individual anti-static bags and in a sturdy cardboard box. Please utilize Western Digital original packaging when available. DO NOT USE peanuts or packing material that can shift or settle during transit.

Merry Christmas to all of you... Hopefully someone at Newegg will see this post!

question for the experts here. when buying one or two drives as a backup, what the standard protocol when you receive them and have no desire to use them right now? perhaps i might use them next year if i get another nas or something fails but for now, it's NIB....do i test it, check it out, etc? thinking about high rate of defective drives. or do i simply rely on warranty?
Warranty begins when the seller ships the product, so, if you shelve the drive you loose the warranty while it sits on the shelf... for that reason I buy as needed!

First, $68 is the lowest price I've seen since BF, looks Newegg might have a surplus of stock they want to get rid of ?

I received my 4TB drive last Fri from Newegg, the packaging was OK - it was placed in a thick bubble pocket inside a small box that just fits a 3.5" drive. There was no rattling but somehow the drive was dead on arrival, it made a huge spinning noise as soon as it was powered up. I immediately started the return process, Newegg provided a free UPS shipping label and already issued a full refund earlier this week.

Looks WD also packs their drives in a similar way to yours, see posts #136 and #145 of the following thread,
https://slickdeals.net/f/15439378-wd-red-plus-3-5-sata-hard-drives-cmr-8tb-155-6tb-105-4tb-69-free-shipping?page=10#commentsBox

With poor packaging of these bare drives, I may have to consider buying new drives in full retail packages only in the future. Currently B&H has it for $70,
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...s_cmr.html

But WDBAVV0040HNC-WRSN seems to be the retailed version of WD40EFRX, which is older and has a small cache than WD40EFZX. Can anyone who has bought the same drive from earlier B&H BF deal confirm ?
I have been buying Hard Drives since the early 80's and was in the computer business up to 1997... but have been buying NAS devices and drives for our home use and still do. .. (these drives were ordered for a NAS that had a deflective drive after 2 1/2 years... funny when I had to return the defectives drive to WD they are specific on how it had to be wrapped. The drive from Newegg are "NEW DRIVES" OEM Or Retail someone in their company has to understand you don't just throw a drive in to a box let alone 2 of them ... (the box was 16" long, 12" wide and 9" high) and the drives were just loose in the box. I am aware on how drives were shipped as an OEM from WD, they are placed in a box with (I guess you can call it cavities) and secure on all sides and top, they didn't bounce around and were never clashing together in shipment! Again, the sad thing is that the CR really was not interested in how they were packaged... Yes, they did set me up on an advanced RMA and I hope they take better care... if not, they will go back again... I posted this to make folks aware on how I received my drives and to see if anyone could see that this just might be a problem...

I got the 8TB of this model on sale last month from Newegg and was surprised it was just in the static bag and bubble wrap crammed in a cardboard box but it wasn't loose in there or anything actually concerning. It felt like an open-box deal rather than a sale on a new product. 🤷
There was NO bubble pack around each drive at all, just the static bag over each... No Protection at all and the box was half filled with that pillow pack material (which adds no protection at all) ... My first clue is when I picked up the box and the drives slid from one end of the box to the other clanking around... You can imagine what a ride in a transport truck is like... Be assured any drive that I receive packaged like this goes back the next day... I don't even open it up... for me, It's DOA... Now the question is, should I send it back exactly how it was sent to me... Or should I do them a favor and package it correctly?

That's a good thing. We don't need tons of packaging on every single thing we buy.
The 6T one I received from Amazon is in its own cardboard box with two protection inserts, which is more environment friendly, comparing to the static bag and bubble wraps. The box is from the WD as it has stick with UPC, model no, mfg no, and S/N. I do not believe that Newegg opens the box, takes the driver out, and repack it. Most likely Newegg gets the drivers in a big box, which is cheaper than the one in the original box.

Sure, as long as you have room to install another drive. You could use a backup software to automate the process. I use acronis, but there are tons out there.

My drive arrived the other day. It was certainly in its anti-static bag & that was well wrapped in plastic air tubes (dont know what else to call them) and the box had some space taken up by standard air bags. But it's a good thing. I knew the drive arrived when it bounced off my front door. Seems the UPS guy pitched it from my driveway/steps at least about 7' below and 10' away. He/She was too lazy to walk up the steps. So I do have to verify the drive is working.
I worked UPS through college. Unload feeders and preload route delivery trucks. Great job. Boy, the stories I have of package handling. But its a waste to try & complain.

These drive are for high order volume, hence the packaging. They don't come in boxes and have minimun packaging. Newegg got them from wd without the bubble wrap. Newegg put bubble wrap to ship to customers.

When shipping tens of thousands of hdd (or anything for that matter) to one business, it best to have the absolute minimum packaging. Dealing with boxes is a pain for the customer and seller.

I agree but when my company orders bulk enterprise drives from our suppliers they don't come like this. Newegg just adds their own flavor of not giving a shit imo.

How many do your company order?

WD probably shipped these drive in cardboard boxes. Each cardboard boxes probably contain 25 to 50 drives. These cardboard boxes is stacked on top of each as high as they can get on a pellet. The pellets are pick up buy folklift and put inside a container or 16 wheeler for transportation.

Most people probably have no experience dealing will large volumes, like thousands or ten of thousands. Opening tens of thousands boxes is very painful. It is very time consuming. Recycling the boxes is also time very time consuming.

Iirc backblaze install a few thousands drive everyday. Imagine how horrible it is to get the hdd out of the box for the workers. I rather have it come in a static bag.
