So I ordered 2 of these drives last week when I saw the deal, They arrived today in a 12"x16"x9" cardboard box and look at how they were packaged.... No protection other that a 3' string of plastic packaging No Wrap on the Drives at all... Just thrown in the box where I am sure UPS carefully handled them! (yea, right)

Last week I had to return a drive for warranty and they have a specific Packaging requirement or, the drives are returned.... I guess NewEgg didn't have those instructions when they sent me these....

The customer service person I first spoke to didn't know what a hard drive was, (nor did they care, Not their Job).... had no idea why I was upset.... I just have to ask anyone here on this tread see this as a problem? I have been in the computer business for over 30 years I have never encountered anything like this

Does anyone else see the problem or am I just being too hard on them?

There was NO bubble pack around each drive at all, just the static bag over each... No Protection at all and the box was half filled with that pillow pack material (which adds no protection at all) ... My first clue is when I picked up the box and the drives slid from one end of the box to the other clanking around... You can imagine what a ride in a transport truck is like... Be assured any drive that I receive packaged like this goes back the next day... I don't even open it up... for me, It's DOA... Now the question is, should I send it back exactly how it was sent to me... Or should I do them a favor and package it correctly?
Noob here, does newegg charge for return shipping. Unless I select return reason as "defective" shipping is not free (for a different item I purchased from newegg).
If the packaging concerns me what should I select for returning reason?
Newegg return policy says (under OVERALL RETURN GUIDELINES),
"Any product that does not exhibit the described reason for the return (i.e., a return initiated for a DOA product that powers on and works properly upon inspection)." are not eligible for return and may be rejected

How many do your company order?

WD probably shipped these drive in cardboard boxes. Each cardboard boxes probably contain 25 to 50 drives. These cardboard boxes is stacked on top of each as high as they can get on a pellet. The pellets are pick up buy folklift and put inside a container or 16 wheeler for transportation.

Most people probably have no experience dealing will large volumes, like thousands or ten of thousands. Opening tens of thousands boxes is very painful. It is very time consuming. Recycling the boxes is also time very time consuming.

Iirc backblaze install a few thousands drive everyday. Imagine how horrible it is to get the hdd out of the box for the workers. I rather have it come in a static bag.

I fully understand, and we don't order thousands at a time. Newegg does know these are being sold/shipped individually either way and should pack them accordingly. I had no complaints with my shipment, it was just different, but the guy who started this got screwed by their negligence.
