Stop buying low grade cheap laptop, you are buying trash home!! They are slow like hell!!

And don't buy device powered by MediaTek. You are funding the Chinese for more R&D to compete with American companies!!
MediaTek is based in Taiwan.

well there is always Samsung who makes their premium devices like laptops and tablets in Vietnam . Also Framework who makes their laptops in Taiwan. Gigabyte as well. I think some ImCs are made in Texas . There are options out there. vaio makes laptops in japan

This was going for this price on a black Friday deal last year, and I got two and gifted one to my buddy, and kept one to load up a bunch of retro games and run Retroarch and it's been amazing. I can emulate up to PS1 with ease on this. The screen and build is great and the battery life on the Mediatek chip much to the short seller troll on here has been amazing. I have higher end Acer 713 Chromebooks but I find myself grabbing this one to game and stream sports and pron (when my wife is asleep or out) to my Google TV so much, I'm surprised the keyboard is holding up. Just a couple sprays of Windex and some napkins and it's good to go! Honestly if this was 20 cheaper it would be slick, that 2026 AUE date on this is what kills it...

I bought this laptop last time when it was on sale. I returned it in a week. It's surprisingly heavy for such a small laptop. What made me return it was because of the resolution, it's only 720p. Other than the weight and resolution, it's a good laptop. It's not the slowest chrome book out there but it's only good for very basic tasks. I also noticed the build quality isn't very good on this, I noticed there are several hair scratches all over the body of the laptop and the bottom cover wasn't tightened by screws. "Shrug" but it only costs $99!

I bought two of these the last time it was on sale. Spoiler alert, I'm keeping both. The quality control is not consistent. Both laptops have a very slightly different tint in color for the screen and the touchpads are sunken in on the bottom right at different levels. The screen and touchpad work fine, but the touchpad pointer movement is sorta floaty. The build for the price is nice. It's sturdy and not flimsy. Also, it works well for browsing and doing leetcode on my bed. I bought this so I can search stuff up on my bed with this instead of using my phone. Typing on a keyboard is faster.

Issues with this laptop:
-Linux sucks with this laptop due to its architecture. Since it's not x86, you can't install apps like Discord for Linux (Web discord is annoying as a tab and the mobile version sucks with a laptop touchpad)
-Due to its ARM CPU (MT8183), it only supports up to USB 2.0 for both its USB-A and USB-C ports. The Best Buy specs are wrong. These aren't USB 3.1 or 3.2.
-No dedicated HDMI port. Only USB-C to HDMI. If you want to charge and use HDMI, you have to use a USB-C Hub since it only has 1 USB-C port. My USB-C hub is still coming in. However, I tried my USB-C to Displayport and it only supported up to 1280 x 720. I tried it on two different 4k monitors. Its ARM CPU supports more than that, but I'm waiting until I get my USB-C hub to test HDMI.

I was quite happy that there were prebuilt Debian and Ubuntu images from hexdump0815 that you can boot on baremetal instead of relying on ChromeOS' Linux VM. Bitrost Mali video driver is still a bit iffy, but it's a pretty good overall experience if you don't need hardware video decoding (I just dual boot for web video). Faster than a Pi 4 fwiw.

But yeah, check if the packages you want support arm64. Most closed-source software, if they even provide a deb, only offer x86/x86-64. You can technically use Box86 to run x86 on ARM (even WINE+Box86 for old Windows games if you're bored), but it's quite a lot of trouble and more fun for tinkering and experimentation than practical.
