Not sure where you're coming from on this. Intel draws 300W on open test benches just to top AMD's gaming on chips that actually hit those speeds in people's normal machines. (Most prebuilts with Intel will actually not beat AMD because you need exceptional cooling or they throttle). So AMD made this ONE chip that could beat Intel using tech that Intel can't match.

Now when I see an Intel chip actually win in gaming at 125W power envelopes, I'll concede the crown to Intel. But AMD does need to get better at lying...ahem...I mean marketing. Just release a 600W chip that runs at 7GHz and needs phase cooling, then act like your chip is the fastest stock chip. That's nearly what Intel is doing. This CPU is very strong in gaming. Neck and neck with the latest CPUs in certain games.
Promo code works with the new AM5 stuff also.

Maybe a hat...
I do not think you will see a difference in most of the games.
Where you will see up to 20% gain is in multi-threading apps and games.
If I was you, for gaming I would save my $$$ and hold onto current CPU

If your not going to do a build for at least a year, is this still a buy?

Have a 2070 Super and AMD 5 3600 and riding it out for a bit
Im pretty confident in saying if you are not building for at least a year, then dont buy components for at least a year. The markets will be very different in a year and theres a 90% chance that you will have more options by then to make your $ go further.

I have a Lenovo y700 with an i5-6600HQ and an Nvidia 960M and a 250GB ssd that's full lol.

I have a microcenter 30 minutes away.

Clearly I need to build a new desktop. I've never built one before. I've been eyeing the 5800x3D for a long time. But so long that all the next gen stuff is coming out. I've been waiting out the ridiculous GPU market.

Can anyone give me a nudge in either direction for New Build - 5800x3D or next gen?
Was debating waiting to do all this on Black Friday.

Well, right now the benchmarks are coming out from next gen, and the 5800x3d is still holding it's own. Depending on what you want, you can likely get better value with 5800 on am4, but be locked out from upgrading in the future, or pay a premium and hope the upgrade path is good. I personally always look for the best value at the previous gen, they tend to clear them out at bargain prices. Also, look very carefully at chip TDP ratings. Newer gens sometimes get more performance with more power. More power equals more heat and cost.

At this point, just wait for black Friday since you need to buy everything new.

Only because AMD is going to double dip because the new cpu's don't have the v-cache and next year you will see some x3d dropping. They are just greedy.
I wouldn't say they are greedy... AMD are just capitalists who are optimizing their profit potential like any other ordinary traded company who's in business of making money.

I would probably wait for the announcement of new amd gpus and to see what type of performance you will get with 13th gen intel processors. If you can't wait, 5800X3D is probably the way to go. Parts are relatively cheap as well, you can get a good b550 mb for under $200 and DDR4 ram is always on sale.

I have no idea where or what brought Intel up to you but it sure wasn't me.

Awesome chip for MMO junkies. Really speeds up crowded areas vs. my prior 5900x.

Worth the upgrade from a 5600x?
Higher benchmarks are sexy and all, but there is no single case where upgrading from 5600X to 5800x3D will take a game from unplayable to playable at 1440p or higher. If you're actually gaming at 1080p with a 3090, where the 5800x3D really shines, I'd have to question your sanity. Wait another generation.

No. I can't recommend building a new machine with this. It's the BEST gaming upgrade for an existing AM4 Ryzen build. I'll probably upgrade my 3600X to it in a year or two.

If you're building in a year, you'll probably be best with Intel's Raptor Lake (about to be released) or more likely, the 7000 series Ryzen X3D chips that will come out at the start of 2023. Those newer 7000 series X3D chips should be the best gaming chips, unless Intel does something awesome with Raptor Lake next month. Even then, "best" Intel chips are literally rated to 350W now (https://www.tomshardware.com/news...turbo-mode [tomshardware.com]). You'll have a hard time finding a cooler rated to dissipate more than 250W.
Is it the best overall upgrade for an AM4 build (coming from a 3600)? I'm more of a console gamer, but I wouldn't mind a boost in performance if I just have to drop the processor in & it can be air cooled.
