Typically (historically) the drives in the easystore are rate limited to 5400 rpm by the firmware even if their enterprise equivalents are 7200 rpm.

I prefer 5400 rpm. Less noise and heat. Still plenty fast to max out a 1 gbit LAN connection.

Thanks OP!

The 14TB is $199.99 and is $14.29 / TB, which is still pretty good.

I purchased the 18TB MYbook that was posted here many months back. It was my first 'shuck', and went off without a hitch. Any reason not to get this "Easystore" model? I had read something about taping over a pin when shucking, but I didn't have to do that for the "MyBook.' Do we have to do that for these "Easystore" models? Thanks for any guidance!
I have shucked many of these for my Synology NAS. I don't have to tape the pin for that. However, if I want to use as an internal drive on my PC, I do have to tape for that. Just FYI.

Best deal on 18TB in a very long time. I'm hoping the 20TB gets a similar drop.
Yes, within 14 days of purchase. You can do it via chat on their website for quickest adjustment.

Purchased a handful of these (3x 14TB and 3x 18TB) during the Black Friday sale. All working totally fine still but they did seem to do something with these latest models that make them very noisy (to the point I can't leave it plugged in for any extended period of time as it's quite an annoying noise!) and they're constantly going to sleep (or needing to wake up when trying to use them) even when using the WD software to disable it.

It could be an issue with my PC, but others have reported it as well. Something about doing this to reduce wear level to the drives?

Either way, probably grabbing another as this price is great. If you're only using it as a backup drive as-needed, you'll probably be fine with it.

It depends on your PSU and the type of cable you use. Also, if you do end up having to do the tape mod, it's super easy with an X-acto knife and some kapton tape. I've done it to several of these drives.

Really had to talk myself out of this as it's a fantastic price but I still have >20TB free on my server.

Thanks to you both. I will be installing it in my desktop with the other 18tb I shucked, but fingers crossed I don't have to do anything. But, even if I do, seems like it won't be too hard . Cheers!

Anyone have a recommendation on a 2-drive Synology?

The tape trick is required to block the 3.3v signal from the PSU, which acts as an "on/off" signal to the drive. Usually not even present in NAS hardware. In PC's, it's up to how the PSU and wiring works. Some you will need to tape. Some you don't.

If you have a modular PSU in your PC and plan on having shucked drives in it for the foreseeable future, I would highly recommend looking up the wire diagram for the SATA power leads and pulling the 3.3v wire from it. It will only affect one modular power lead and it means you dont ever have to worry about the tape trick. I've done this to my last 3 power supplies. There's always a sufficient enough diagram out there on which wire to remove and the amount of devices out there that still require 3.3v on an SATA lead is very very small. In fact the only one I've ever seen is the Corsair Commander Pro controller and I'm not even sure if the newer versions (Commander Core?) still use it. This is a WAY safer and more reliable way to power drives that would otherwise need the tape trick. Just use that modified lead as your dedicated hard drive power and use other leads for everything else that needs SATA power plugs.

That's a great deal. My Chase Freedom is only 1% bonus for BB, so on top of 1% everyday it simply matches the 2% I get always with Citi Double Cash. Bummer.

Why not buy this instead?

https://slickdeals.net/f/16443676-16tb-western-digital-wd-gold-enterprise-class-3-5-7200-rpm-internal-hard-drive-250-free-shipping?src=frontpage

Capital One has 12% CB, making price for 16TB $220 which is $13.75 per TB, 7200 RPM, 5 years warranty, 2.5M hours MTBF

Unless you need an enclosure for some reason, but if you are going to shuck the drive to use it NAS, I think Golds are better

I am guessing because not everyone has a Capital One card?

Fair point, there are another CB sites, not cc related, that offer up to 5.75%, making it slightly less slick, but still below $15/TB target

I have a Capital One card but I still prefer these as they are almost always white label helium drives which are usually efficient, cool, and quiet.
