FYI, I have a 980 pro 2tb in my new build. It's great but it runs really hot. It would sit idle in the 50's and even basic stuff was putting into the 70's and low 80's Celsius. I use it for my main OS drive (I know, overkill). Anyways, the motherboard included 'heat sink' bar built into it wasn't helping. Removed that and added my own heat sink kit.
Used this, looks great and lowered the temps. It never goes above 45 even under prolonged cpu benchmarking.

I replaced the thermal pads with thermal grizzly minus 8. I used a 1mm and .5mm half and half sized on the 980. This is because of you look at the ssd from an angle, the controller and other modules on it are actually not all at the same height, meaning using just one sized pad for the whole thing won't make good contact and compression.
Great video on this issue and how to address it, should you feel so inclined.

Obviously this is all a bit overkill, but I enjoy this kind of tinkering and it was a lot of fun to see the temps improve so much. Enjoy!
I have the 980 Pro 500 GB. If I knew then what I know now, I would have gotten something cheaper. Right now, Newegg and B&H have the Intel 670p 2TB for $80. If your most stressful storage application is PC gaming, you don't need to shell out for a top-of-the-line PCIe Gen4 drive. Just look at real world benchmarks, instead of synthetic tests, the performance difference between the 980 Pro and most other drives is pretty small.
Make sure the firmware is up to date with Samsung Magician Smilie Good deal, thanks OP!

Does this work with steam deck?
no, steam deck ssd uses 2230 size. This is the typical 2280 size. The most common 2230 you can buy is probably the sabrent one

Technically, you should be only cooling the controller, but not the NAND itself.

I opted for sn850x. It's faster with a few more bucks. 980 seems a bit outdated after looking at a few comparison videos. 990 seems to be the answer to sn850x but too pricey for what it is.

The firmware fixes that issue plaguing Samsung NVMEs dying? I read about the issue but never followed up on if it was resolved or not.

I returned this and bought the SN850X so I say yes.

My reasoning is that I keep my PC's for a long time and the SN850X has a higher MTBF.

thanks for this Smilie .. here's a youtube video tutorial/revieew of the acidalie but I was a bit confused as to whether or not you can use this without installing it onto a card like the youtuber does and just fasten it directly to the motherboard?

sn850x if you're using it for a PS5. 980 Pro has potentially bad firmware that you need to make sure is updated first before using. If you have no problem doing that then 980 Pro is fine but I'd still just go with sn850x.

All this talk about the 980 firmware. People should really do some research before ceaselessly parroting this nonsense.

There should be no 980 Pro sold by Amazon today that is old enough to have the issue. I bought mine from Amazon in November last year and the firmware was up to date.

Check the rev? Yes.

Worry about it? No.

Definitely looked into custom water cooling https://static.slickdealscdn.com/ima...lies/smile.gif My 13700k was easily hitting 100c in benchmarking, and that is with a thermalright frame, NT-H2, and arctic liquid freezer 2 360 Aio. I might do a custom loop, when I eventually change out my 3080ti for a 4090 or maybe a 5000 series by then lol. For now a voltage offset of -0.1 and custom fan curves, have finally tamed it. Won't go above 90c now under 100% load and raised my cinebench score from 28500's to 29500ish.
Fair warning on the arctic cooler… it's a thick chunky boy and I couldn't fit it in my corsair 5000x running on the top, without some minor modifications.
cause you don't know what you're doing with air flow and case pressure

CHEAPER if you just buy it from Samsung DIRECTLY ($144). Or if you don't want to buy a fake from amazon or... don't want to deal with Neweggs shitty Customer Service if anything goes awry.

An external SSD will do a max of 1,050 MBps for USB 3.1 so no way is it worth buying any PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive much less one of the faster ones. Any Gen 4 NVMe is overkill to convert to an external. Even one of the slowest Gen 3 that you can find dirt cheap will easily do 1,050 the limit is US. 3.1.
