To be fair, I have an M1 with 8gb and have no trouble throwing a bunch of programming and dev work at it. I'm talking android emulators running while having multiple IDEs running and building...

I wanted to get this one, but after watching this I not so sure. Might go with m1 if I find good deal. Although, this is for laptop, I assume its same with mini.

I will not get into the "8 gb" debate, because I feel like it's been discussed ad nauseam in every other M1/M2 Mac thread. I can only speak from my personal experience with an M1 Mini and M1 Air, both with 8 gb, that this is a lot of performance/$. It's an amazing entry price for anyone considering entering the Mac OS environment, with a system that will smoke all use cases for the average family and even handle photo/video editing (very well, I might add) and even some gaming (if you temper your expectations).
There is no debate because 8 GB is 8GB. The question is if it fits in your use case. I am on board with you until you came to gaming. I know a LOT of people dumping windows and moving to steam on Linux, I suspect this will happen in Apple-land at some point. The m processors are awesome--totally my perception.

How much more is the 16GB model? I don't care about storage, etc. just want the additional memory.

VMware workstation also now.

I moved my Windows VM to my x86 server and now remote in to them, works perfectly fine and don't have to worry about bugs, interactions or slow-downs.
There is a hack to have parallels on macos without license/subscription. works on ventura. Google "high approach parallel windows" and you get to use parallels for free without subscription

$190 more for the 512gb version on same listing, which has full disk speed as written. Not that most would even notice - these stats aren't THAT bad. But unless you are very fluent with keeping storage on externals and/or cloud, I'd recommend the 512gb anyway!

No way MacOS has almost 30% desktop market share. Where are you getting those stats?

If this is really true, game developers should really be porting more games to MacOS.

… and Microsoft is obliging by obsoleting perfectly good Windows 10 hardware with Windows 11. (Yah, security, bla, bla, bla). Windows 10 can run well on 8-10 year old hardware if it has an SSD. HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Microsoft itself (Surfaces) demanded Microsoft push new PC sales. So unlike Windows 10 that can run fine even on Windows 7 machines…

Never thought we'd dump Windows but our mobile stuff - phones and tablets - are already Apple and we have one MacBook Air M1. October 2025 (end of Win10) is coming fast and these Mac Mini M2's at $499 are looking very tempting.

Bonus 1: Loving the automatic - and 100% complete - seamless back up of all Apple devices as well as the seamless cross platform texting, internet, copy/pasting, photos, Find me, AirTags, etc…

Bonus 2: With Windows 11, Microsoft went all in with Google Android mobile integration, providing another reason for Apple mobile folks to leave Microsoft.

[EDIT:] I'm old enough to not be defensive about down flags on the anonymous Internet, but having a large number of Windows 10 machines in our home, I am sincerely interested in the specific counter arguments to my comment. Where, specifically, is the comment flawed, particularly for mainstream Internet browsing, streaming, email, etc…? Are the down flaggers gamers? I'd totally understand that but please say so.
I switched from using Windows PC to a M1 Mac as my main desktop a year ago and don't regret it at all. The Mac is way more stable and the integration with other Apple devices is awesome. The only thing I wish was better on Mac was gaming, but can't have everything.

Apple needs to invest more into the gaming market.

Yep, I got you - what I meant by gaming is, it can do more than someone might expect from system without dedicated graphics. It's by no means a gaming powerhouse, and Apple/Mac isn't known as a platform for gaming, but I was impressed at how some of my own Steam games that work on Mac OS ran on my M1 Mini.

I've been watching these things for a deal so here's a round up of what I understand from this and other similar deal threads

M2 Mini w/ 256GB SSD takes a read/write hit compared to 512GB+ - still stinkin' fast, your call if the way you use it will suffer

8GB ram looks low for spec-racing, but punches above its weight compared to other platforms because, among other things, it's embedded into the M2 chip (as with M1)

You can expect 5-7 years of OS Upgrades (new features) out of these things and Updates (security) to whatever macOS Apple decides to max the device at for a couple years after that. Not surprising since they make the money off of the hardware sale, not the OS license sale.

M3 was always a given, but it looks like it may be coming earlier than expected. Post-Covid supply chains be unpredictable even for trillion dollar companies.

There are also benchmarks on YouTube showing that for most uses, the difference is not noticeable. 16GB RAM made more sense than 512GB in those benchmarks, so it really depends on your usage.

ChromeOS will go up as Google is starting to cut costs in every corner. Employees are getting new Chromebook instead of normal laptops like MacBook or Win Laptop. Applause

Just received my 8g/256g today. Coming from an Intel 2019 MBP with 16g/512g. Going to test drive it for a few days and see what happens.

For those on the fence - I use this system primarily as an RDP to another machine, but also typically have about ten Safari tabs, Microsoft Teams, Apple Music/Spotify, Discord, Excel, Messages, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp open, as well as a Stream Deck, Elgato Control Center, and OpenDNS running in the background. I do record from time to time with Logic Pro but it's rare and it's a hobby, not work, so time savings aren't a big deal to me there. In other words, this is mostly a 'work from home' computer and not an enthusiast/creative setup.

So far memory pressure is hovering at about the same amount as the MBP and I haven't noticed anything sluggish. The MBP sat at about 13 GB memory used, this one's sitting at 6.4 GB. No complaints yet but if I get any stuttering or freezing, this one will go back for a 16g/512g and I'll update here.

I'm a 4kvideo editor and heavy adobe suite user still hoping for a deal on a M2 pro mini. The upgrades are overpriced, and once RAM and drive are boosted, it's the same price as the M1 studio base - with several things still inferior. We'll see if the studio gets M2 soon without too much price hump, but an M2 ultra is going to make the projected mac pro a real challenge...

This is just such a good deal, I don't really understand how apple did it. Fully expected the m2 mac mini to start at $699 and not budge on price but out of the gates it dipped to $500.
Their sales are in the shitter that's why.
