To be fair, I have an M1 with 8gb and have no trouble throwing a bunch of programming and dev work at it. I'm talking android emulators running while having multiple IDEs running and building...

I wanted to get this one, but after watching this I not so sure. Might go with m1 if I find good deal. Although, this is for laptop, I assume its same with mini.

Rather than lamenting the lack of gaming on my Mac, I just bought a Open-Box gaming laptop for less than $700 from Best Buy. Ryzen 7 6800H/RTX3050Ti/16Gig. Now I have the best of both worlds. But now I can't whine about Macs anymore! <shakes tiny fist>

Amazon shows not shipping until May 22 but was able to price match with Best Buy and will receive tomorrow. If you need it now, price match with Best Buy while you can. If you prefer to wait for some reason, ordering with Amazon will let you "lock in" a price now and give you a month or more to think about it or watch for a better deal.

One interesting thing with the Best Buy price match, the CSR said he couldn't process an upfront discount but issued a partial refund after I ordered. This was via online chat so not sure if in-store would be the same, procedurally.

Question for Apple folks: I am debating between a 14 inch MB Pro 16gb RAM vs a 16 inch M1 Max with 32gb RAM.

I like the specs on the M1 Max as I'm concerned 16gb RAM will shorten its lifespan but i love the form factor of the 14 inch and how portable it is. The 16 is massive and feels too big to rest on my lap in bed or on the go.

What do you guys think? Is 16gb enough? I got the M1 Max on sale for $2499 so it was kind of a steal, I just wish it was a little smaller. I can't make up my mind. I'm half tempted to keep the M1 Max and then buy an Air for portability but I just can't decide what to do.
It wholly depends upon your use case. I have the MBP14/16GB (paid $1600) and it supports two monitors which wasn't enough for my trading apps. I could run 2-3 studies in it no problem, but I needed 3 monitors. I also do video/audio/photo studio work and I don't see a problem. The 14 even for me is pretty beefy and heavy and I came from a 2019 MBP which was much lighter. So I wish it were a tad lighter, but my buddy has the 16 and it is mammoth, almost to the point of not being portable.

One area I gave up the ghost is container/VM which I moved to an x86 server which has 128 GB and that is an area where I think you can stress, but I use RDS and can't tell at all its not local, so I am happy. I fiddled w/ VM on ARM and not entirely happy with it, so running a cloudPC/RDS seems to fit the bill for now.

I think over time Valve will get better on a Mac because I know a bunch of folks who really hate windows and moved to Linux platform and are very happy. I think if that happens you will see studios get experience w/ the CI/CD pipeline and tools and then the experience will get better. But for right now gaming on a Mac is a no go. I'm building a streaming server to be run in Unraid, so will see but I think remote game streaming solves the issue for the near term. So maybe you buy the Mac for what you need, save the extra $1000 or more on super expensive specs, and as you did buy a gaming machine/laptop and call it a day.

Could you backup the iPhone, iPad, etc. to a separate USB or TB hard drive? I'm a little concerned about the 256GB hard drive space not being enough, but my plan is to get a separate drive for extra space. Is that a "smart" plan? Now I'm worried I should spend the extra $190 for the 512GB….
I purchased an Acasis thunderbolt m.2 NVMe adapter and put a 2 TB SSD in there. I tested it gets around 2-3000 MB/sec which is on par or faster than the internal storage. I was pleasantly surprised. The bonus I can use it against my MBP and Mini. BTW I think I paid $110 for the Acasis and $110 for the 2 TB SSD. If you can find Apple storage for 2 TB for $200 then I have land in Mars to sell you. MacOS makes it super easy to integrate remote storage now, so I say save thousands and do it this way.

I do all my media editing, video, etc on this drive because I don't want to kill my internal drive and if I wear out my external one, NVMe SSD are so inexpensive and getting more expansive per TB/$ value. So I literally just use the ridiculously small internal storage for O/S apps and put everything else on the TB storage. Apple IMHO really missed the mark on this one and forces people for bad choices for SSD and super-inflated prices. I was watching a video where a 256GB NVMe chip costs apple a little under TWO DOLLARS at scale. Yes they are ripping us off to that magnitude.

Absurdly good value. A 16GB version at $600 would be the super sweet spot. Would crush the non-gaming PC market wrt value.

Of course, an external hard drive would work. Just get one with a thunderbolt connection. There's also a lot of accessories that are docks to put the mac mini on top of and you can add m.2 hard drives to that, and usually they will have extra usb ports too.

Or build/ buy a pc and add as much storage as you want internally.

I switched from using Windows PC to a M1 Mac as my main desktop a year ago and don't regret it at all. The Mac is way more stable and the integration with other Apple devices is awesome. The only thing I wish was better on Mac was gaming, but can't have everything.
I haven't had instability with my windows PCs in nearly a decade.

I'm done with buying apple products until they make it easier to repair and upgrade them. I'm tired of this soldered memory crap…

Yes, that's the important reason that M2 mini sale is poor. Apple made mistake to cut corner on this. Now they have to cut the price to move the inventory.
As we've discussed in here ad nauseum that's complete nonsense. No Mac Mini buyer should care about max thruput; random IO is vastly more important. And at that, the M2 is a mild upgrade from the previous M1 generation before it.

How'd you get it for $1600?

Thanks for the input! I think I'm going to stick with the 14". If I really do find myself hitting the limits of the 16gb down the road I can always upgrade then. I need to stop acting like my decision is permanent or the end of the world but that's how it feels to me because of how infrequently I upgrade laptops lol. I got ten years out of my last Windows laptop.
