This is basically a 5600G without the integrated graphics, correct?

Correct, slightly under 5600G but newer and the price should make up for it.

The Wraith Stealth does the job for 65W CPUs like the one in this listing. They're also a significant improvement from the worst of the bad old days of pack-in coolers (anyone recall the tinfoil Intel would toss in a box alongside their CPUs?).

However, be aware of the limits if you're trying to maximize the potential of your CPU:
https://www.techspot.com/review/1...-compared/
(I say this while operating no less than three AMD Ryzen systems using the included Wraith Stealth cooler)

Good luck!

Alright, so how much of an improvement would this be over a 4690k at 4ghz?

Thanks for any advice.

I like using Passmark as a quick general assessment of how powerful something is.

5500 Passmark score is just under 20,000

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu....00&id=4807

And the 4690k is just under 6000 score

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu....Hz&id=2284

So quite a big jump.

Also the 5500 is very similar to the older ryzen 5 3600 and here's a test showing the difference in games between a 4690k and 3600

Also this video shows the difference between the 3600 and 5500 and there's some big surprises the 5500 is sometimes about the same and other times quite a bit better.

But the one thing it shows is how important having a good GPU is. This showed how even a ryzen 5500 was bottlenecked by an RTX 3060 and when paired with an RTX 3080 it did significantly better.

Considering an Intel i5 13400f is more than twice the cost. You can save that 100$ and put it towards a better GPU

Thanks for all of that info. It looks like I should get the 5500. I just searched hardwareswap, and they're going for nearly that price used.

I currently have a 6750xt, so that would get me closer to the real capability for it.

I'm mostly trying to find something to hold me over until the microcenter opens where I live. So, this seems like a great option.

Do you have a suggestion for a motherboard that will allow me to upgrade to a Ryzen 7, like the 5800x3d or 7800x?

Thanks!

Why would you compare it to the 13400F? That CPU is miles better than the 5500.

The closer comparison would be the 12400F, which is $99, easily better for gaming than the 5500 but slightly slower in multi-thread.

This is really tempting to drop into my existing MB to replace a 1500x. I'd love to get a 5600x but it never seems to get down to anywhere close to this cheap. The PCI-E speed limitation of these doesn't matter since my MB would be the limiting factor anyway.
