If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

I said maybe because the beta worked but it's still the beta. Won't know for sure how it plays until release.
Oh, new game, I thought it didn't work with current releases for some reason. Thanks.

The ROG Ally is to the Steam Deck as the Game Gear was to the GameBoy.
A flash in the pan with awful battery life. I'll stick with Steam Deck, which has far better first-party and third-party better support.
sega game gear was great but for the battery

I have a PC solely for playing games on TV. Experience sucks big time, partly because windows is garbage and partly because all the game installer that take minutes to load.
It is also not great to have mouse and keyboard just to lunch a game. Console provides much smoother experience.
PCs are so customizable, that you can only be talking about the one you own. I can build a PC that I can power on and be in a game as fast as any console, aside from the Steam Deck with its pause/standby mode. Maybe you need faster RAM and M.2 hard drives.

Also, if you're opposed to PC gaming in general, why are you even in this thread?

I've personally had a great experience with my steam deck. That said, almost every game I've played with it was in my steam library, and worst I had to do was side load a newer version of proton.

I can definitely see the allure of this device and may pick one up a few months after launch. Given Asus track record lately, I just want to see how well they handle support and bug fixes.

I feel there's still quite a market for both of these considering steam still hits that 399 price point on the lower end (that one plus a 512gb m.2 upgrade for around 50 bucks and you're winning value wise).
This device would be good for Xbox Gamepass subscribers who don't want to try to install the PC Gamepass games on Linux. It's also good for all those free Epic games we've gotten over the years.

The regular Z1 is quite cut down on the gpu.

If you don't believe all these major companies don't pay and or give $$$$ in free product to all big reviewers for YT, Twitch etc to buy biased reviews you aren't paying attention. Even SD has threads full of shill bots built for the purpose of promoting group think buys.

Oh I believe it. But what you guys are accusing is a big conspiracy for Asus to give everyone money to say things positively about the Ally without merit. I've watched at least 5 reviews of the Ally and what I got from it were consistent pros and cons. To me, that is good enough to have a sense of what the device is like.

How do they arrive at a $700+ value for these? Seems like they're just playing off of the steam deck hype.
This is a 8-core/16-thread Zen 4 CPU with the new Radeon 780M. It beats the Steam Deck in both CPU and GPU by a significant degree, and is only $50 more than the 512GB Steam Deck.

Hard pulls cost ~5-10 points each & affect your score for at least 1 year, 2 in some cases. All disappear after 2 years. Typically only want to have 1-2 per year so you have another 1-2 at the ready in case of need for emergency use/loan/credit line.
I just had 12+ hard pulls in the last 2 years. 7 in the last year and on my current report.

Still have 755 credit score. It can lower it but not as much like another poster said.

I'm getting this for the same reason I got the OLED switch, better screen. The one on the Steam Deck is not terrible but it's not great either, just meh. I mean of all the screens in the world Valve couldn't source a better panel than the one we got? Even my cheap Motorola phone has better colors than the Deck.

if you play with this thing plugged in you will see an enormous performance boost over the steam deck. the ability to use it with eGPUs (if you're interested in spending the money) is pretty cool too.

i'm sure steamOS will be hacked on, it's all open source so there's no reason why it wouldn't work.

i am running win11 full time on my steam deck (game pass is a must for me) so it doesn't make sense to keep the deck. the touchpads will be lame to lose but i'll manage. strategy games are better with a full sized monitor anyway so i haven't found myself using them very much
SteamOS should be ported to it in short order. However, much of the magic of SteamOS is the work Valve did with proton to get individual windows games to work. If I understand right, the software will all be there (I think proton is just based on wine), but all the custom game profiles might not be open source.

Long story short, lots of games that work well on the steamdeck out of box, might not on other devices running SteamOS, at least not without doing some work.

Did you upgrade the 64gb memory to a larger SSD?

I'm in the same boat in terms of waiting for real end user reviews, except I don't own a Deck. I was looking at the 64gb $399 model or going with the ROG Ally at $699.

I saw YouTube videos of the Ally struggling to run Returnal on lower settings, the Armory Crate being clunky, and a less than polished user experience.

If anything, the Deck showed that it takes time for a manufacturer to polish a product. However, I've heard mixed opinions on Asus too. Real world reviews are key, especially since $699 is a lot more coin on a powerful handheld gaming PC.
I've only been pairing my 64GB SD with 512GB microSD cards. Thinking of switching to using a 1TB intetnal SSD instead to hold games I play most often so I won't need to swap SD cards.

Even newer handheld PC devices coming in the future will always not run every latest AAA games well. So my thought was to first decide if the games I wanted to play would run well on a device. If they do that's enough to make a purchase decision. As such, I see the 399 SD model still has no competition and could be the best buy for some people.

Awesome! Another item bought to be used as a paperweight because you're old now with kids but has spare money and no time to clear your game backlog.
I am of adulting age, and use my Steam Deck regularly. My partner and I also opted to not have children, so there's that.

About the battery life, nobody seems to mention FSR. Run the games at 900×540 and upscale to the native resolution. I do that with the Deck all the time if I need extra battery life.

Only up to 2hrs in gaming battery life. This will hold back the handheld severely. Will have to also pack an external battery.
You can clock it down to the steam decks specs when on battery and increase battery life

I would take everything ETA Prime says with a grain of salt. All his beelink reviews don't line up with my experiences and other reviews.

The proprietary port is interesting and at least already technically has options available. I wonder if people will homebrew their own epgu enclosures
ETA Prime never reviews anything negatively. Not quite a shill. More like a product showcase.
