meanwhile, Apple charges $200 to upgrade from 256GB to 512GB ROFLMAO.
Quoting this to help raise awareness. Update firmware immediately on this.
it's important that you update the firmware on these prior to using it. the ones with the older firmwares have a lot of issues.

I paid $170 for this seven months ago, which was a good price then.
I paid $180 for 1 gig before they changed the price the next month.

Same, paid $190 plus tax with heatsink. It was 'on sale' from $230 or more. Still in box.

The last batch received from newegg was Mar 2023 build which already includes the new firmware which has probably been there a half year already.

Ordering today, you'd likely receive even newer build.

I would say it us highly unlikely you'd receive a build older than that today from newegg, so no need to upgrade the firmware you already got it.

Come on Samsung Teamgroup and Silicon Power 2TB are $62. A performance SSD should be a couple of bucks more not almost 2x the price. Stop keeping SSD prices high and forcing the average capacity to stay at 1-2TB.

Let's be real, that's an apples to oranges comparison. You're talking about DRAM-less PCIe 3.0 drives that were slow for 5 years ago vs. PCIe 4.0 drives with DRAM. The Samsung 970 evo of 2018 is much much faster than any of today's super budget offerings from Teamgroup or Silicon Power, to the tune of 2-4x, and the 980 Pro extends the gap. We're talking 2x-4x performance.

Are the Teamgroup or SP drives more than enough for 99% of users? Yes, absolutely. But you pay more for a Subaru WRX than the base model Impreza because while they may look similar, they are completely different cars. Few people need a WRX, but to those who do, a base model just doesn't get the job done.
