Misfires generally clear immediately, if it hasn't gone away typically you're looking at wiring damage, injector problem or physical engine damage. I'd start by checking the wiring harness carefully. When you have a single cylinder misfire it's always good to swap coils rather than replace. If the mis moves its the coil, if the mis doesn't move it's not the coil.
At this price, don't expect it to work on some extended Canbus protocols. For example VW/Audi, and other vehicles that have manufacturer specific extended coding.
I think those readers are more expensive. So while these may work fine for a lot of cars, it would only pull generic codes common in the OBDII protocols. Things like Misfires, sensor signal low, Oxygen sensor errors, something short to ground etc etc. I don't think you can get too far in and modify module settings. On my Ford, you need specific software/hardware to get into the BdyCM, for example.

(Background: built a VW/Audi OBDII opto-isolated reader with my brother from schematics online around 2003, it worked with VAGCOM software that is still popular today)
$12 devices have been clearing basic codes for years.

"It can do essential work like resetting monitors, CEL issues, and clearing codes. It can also read live data, collect vehicle information, freeze data and display code definitions on the screen."

Should I return and get this one for $13, I'm not an expert when it comes to auto stuff..., thanks?

I have a VW jetta that had a cylinder 5 misfire code. i changed all 5 coils, all 5 plugs, even the entire valve cover (there was oil getting into where the plugs were) and the code wont go away. can things like this clear the code out? (i know it will come back if its still a problem)
did you do a compressing test? Buy a Harbour Freight compression test kit before throwing plus, wires, coils at the problem when you have a cylinder misfire code. If compression is low.. well it's the engine and you are gonna be tearing down to find the root (valves or cylinder/pistons).

If compression tests good, you can look at plugs/wires/coils. You can do a spark test to rule out coils.

Compressiona nd spark test is cheap and easierthan just throwing parts at it

Used this to clear misfire DTCs on my 2006 Kia Rio. Works fine for simple basic OBDII normal code clearing. Not expecting extended CAN communication like higher end scanner would, for this being $12.

The Autel is ostensibly a "brand name" device and it looks a little nicer, but actual functionality wise, it's only slightly better (looks like it has better live data output) if you're a real heavy mechanic type that may be beneficial, if you just want to read and clear codes this thing is definitely the cheaper alternative.

What's a good tool that covers even VW/Audi?
If you want power user features to make custom code changes etc VAG-COM now VCDS is the best probably. Not cheap though.

I would say having a reader is probably a good tool to have, although super cheap readers I'd worry about them shorting or otherwise have bad QC that could literally break your car (expensive repair!).

I have a Scangauge II (like $100+ when I got it many years ago) and a newer BT model that connects with an app. The benefit to the app enabled module is that it can poll data from the internet to give you better clues as to what the real issue is. Also, OBDC readers can access a plethora of data about vehicle/engine performance so if you're into those details, good on you.

Just last week in my 2018 Pilot, I was driving the kids around and the car randomly presented an "Emissions Issue" message on the driver HUD along with the CEL. The car ran really rough all of a sudden and lacked acceleration. Fortunately I was within 1/2 mile of my destination so I was able to pull the car in and park. I keep the OBDC reader in the console, so I plugged it in and within 30 seconds (have to connect to BT so it takes a bit longer than the "non smart" units) it said the issue was P2652. Googling that with the car Y/M/M told me that the issue wasn't really "emissions" but instead a $36 oil pressure switch that controls VCM. Also, that $36 switch was in stock at an Autozone a couple miles away and the swap out (Youtube) was probably a 5 minute job with a deep well 24mm socket.

If not for the code reader, I probably would have had to take it to the dealer (or a trusted shop, but I don't have one of those), which would have wasted a ton of my time as well as cost a whole lot more $$$$. I elected to have the car towed back to my house (I have AAA so it was only time/inconvenience, and all my tools are there anyway) and within 3 hours of the error popping up on the screen, I'd already replaced the part and did a test drive.

So yeah, a code reader can really save your tail some times.

Anyone know if this will tell me the live transmission temp on a GX470 while towing? I cant seem to pull that with my BlueDriver or cheap Chinese knockoff + crappy app.

Are you sure the car even has a thermocouple?

All I know is that guys are pulling trans temp with a scangauge. Which seems overkill for wanting to know if I need a bigger trans cooler.

You can never go too big. Cold ATF has a negligible effect on MPG as long as you have enough temp for full torque converter lockup. I like to go with something like 40-50K GVW rating for most applications.

I would keep it.
To echo big Mike's post, I've bought the Autel MS309 $20ish ones to give out as gifts because they are generally good enough and are a reliable brand, but yours can do live data as well, which is a pretty nice bonus should you need it one day.
Plus $30 is approximately the lowest that's gone so far, you didn't get robbed. Also an arguably nicer display and it says it's updatable. Worth the extra money IMO.

It'll potentially be of use any time there is a logged code.

where is the case?
The combo deal is still listed as an "Applicable Promotion", as "Extra Savings" right underneath the listed coupon on the product page.
If you can't find it (don't see how that would happen though), here's [amazon.com] the case. Add both to cart and use coupon code "MH9VIPII" for 30% off the case.

If the OG post coupon is dead like some claim, then this is the next best deal available for this model.
