Since Apple doesn't have a stock/retail configuration with 16GB for the MBA (it is all considered BTO even if some Apple Stores do stock additional configurations) we won't get great deals on them because retailers like BestBuy, Amazon and Costco can't even carry them. Best bet is B&H, Adorama who can order BTO and does slightly discount, or Refurb Apple Store.

Yes.

I have the base Mac mini m1 with 8gb. I run dozens of browser tabs on it without it breaking a sweat. It can generate AI images locally (about 2 minutes per 512x512 image). I was very skeptical of Apple's move away from Intel but they hit it out of the park with these.

go fix my browser? as I stated, it's up to date. many other people have issues with 8GB being insufficient for basic use cases.
My safari keeps reloading and it's super slow. Chrome is much better if you do not care about battery life

Little torn between education at apple and Best Buy and need some advice
Looking at the 512 ssd and trading my 2018 MBP
With trade in and taxes (including Best Buy plus)
I am at around 980 from Best Buy
And 1140 from apple (plus the 150$ GC)
The Best Buy config is stock 8gb / 10gpu and apple 8gpu and 16gb ram
Apple is paying 315 and BB 360 for my old MBP.
I don't buy much from apple so not sure if I need the 150gc (that I am effectively paying for)
This is for regular use (email, browsing, videos and MS office)
I know there is a lot of debate about RAM. Is 16 gb really worth it? Planning to keep maybe 3 years…
Finally I am not a student but my wife has an edu. Email in case.
Anyway thoughts welcomed
This makes no sense. Price the same configurations, not different ones. Plot out the math for the costs. Go with the cheapest one. Done.

I would get a 16GB laptop, and typically once you do that the 14" MBP at $1399 or the 16" MBP at $1399 are the better deals, but that's just me.

is 8gb enough for multiple chrome tabs?
Use safari bro, much more efficient. I have friends working in Google Chrome team and they have been working for years to optimize memory issue and that is the suggestion he gives me

Dude, everyone would take a $ 650 M1 MBA with 512/16 specs over this $900 MBA m2 with measly 8 GB of ram. Hardly any difference between the chip and gpu. But mine has 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of ram.

Mine only has 30 cycles too. This was a steal.
That is a steal for 650.

Just switched from 256gb 8gb m1 to 512gb 8gb m2 and cannot even tell the difference in performance. One thing I will say I the m2 doing my same normal tasks since I got it has not used any memory swap. Also m1 has better keyboard feel trackpad click and design is better for typing. Not that m2 is bad but there really is no wrong choice here.

It's so scummy to me that Best Buy took away the Elite and Elite Plus tiers of the rewards system just so they could charge an additional yearly membership fee for the same perks you used to get automatically based on your spending. I guess the benefit now is that you don't have to spend a certain amount to get or maintain those benefits…

I have M1 MB Air and its great with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD. The faster 512GB SSD helps make up for less RAM. Would not want the slower 256GB SSD for slower performance and less storage headroom.

Even Microsoft Edge is more efficient and its built on Chromium, but typical MSFT is ruining a really good browser with their usual shenanigans of too much MSFT crap in the browser.

I have a 2020 Macbook Air with M1 and use it as a glorified Chromebook. It handles most of my browsing, though, I've been seeing my RAM usage is around 7/8GB of RAM. For future proofing, I think I'd pay extra for the 16GB deals if I can find them.
Same my m1 has been a beast I love it for general tasks.. it's the laptop that goes with me on trips and such because of battery life really

Wrong as hell. If you ever tried a 16+256 you won't say that. If you need space, 512 is necessary. But you are talking the speed? No matter how fast your ssd is, you can never, ever match the speed of memory. When 8gb air slowing down, there is no way a faster ssd can help much. Totally garbage.

So true...and you can ALWAYS add FAST external storage.....can't add ram.
