I use Wolf Launcher, no OS rollback. I don't see any banner ads.

Is there a guide for this?

Thanks for your review! I've been eyeing this for a while but it hardly goes on sale so kept waiting, guess it's at the age it needs an upgrade :/
Not sure there's much of an upgrade they can do even the older versions are just as good as the newest models. The only difference there is the newest can do Ai upscaling of video on the fly and the older models can't. So if you watch a lot of older content where it's say720p it can be scaled up pretty well.

I still think the Shield is the best of the lot.. with some caveats. It takes real work to get it optimized, but then it should be good for years.

The new Android TV v9 updates have been a disaster, particularly for audio but also the newly introduced intrusive advertisements and telemetry.

Google has taken over the Nvidia Shield in a big way.

The latest Shield I set up, I rolled the OS back to v8.23 and installed a custom launcher (FLauncher - open source) to avoid the banner ads. It works --perfectly-- for every codec. This takes some work the first time. It took me 2+ hours on power shell / command prompt to 1. roll back OS to v8 and 2. make FLauncher the default launcher. The last time I spent that much time typing in command prompt was when my router bricked after an update. I could probably do it in less than an hour now that I've had that experience.

If you are watching local files from NAS, network, attached USB drive.. the Shield is unbeatable. Of course it also works fine with the usual Android TV apps. I still don't see how firestick or apple tv are actual competition if you use local files. If all one does is stream services, then of course, get a roku/firestick or similar.
Do you have a tutorial link to roll back?

Too old, and does not play latest codecs. For example, no HDR in YouTube. The built in media player to my Sony TV does YouTube HDR just fine, but this old $170 player cannot? Pass. I'd pick up another one for $99.

Simply false. For video playback, the shield is still the best device out there..

If you need a pure passthrough experience, shield is the easiest.

but if you need to stream 4k plex with uncompressed Atmos audio and HDR without transcoding... there isnt really an alternative.
FireTV Cube 3rd gen does passthrough audio from plex including DolbyHD Atmos. It's the only reason the Cube is in my living room right now and my shiny new Apple TV 4k 2nd gen is in the basement. The Apple TV is faster, cleaner, no ads, and overall better but it transcodes the audio into 6 channel and loses the atmos data and they don't plan on fixing that. If the Apple TV did passthrough it would be the clear winner.

I can't imagine paying $200 for old tech when two better cheaper faster options exist (AppleTV if you don't need Atmos, FireTV Cube if you do).

How are you doing the 'VLC to play content off home server'? I'm using Plex, but it sounds like there is another option using VLC. I'm just not sure how you configure.
You setup a smb1 network share then navigate to the share in vlc player

Don't these have pretty dated hardware at this point? I feel like the Series S for $150 that was available a while back seems like a lot more for the money.

Question: Has anyone seen any speed comparison of the 2019 Nvidia Pro to the new Amazon Fire Stick 2023 4K Max with upgraded 2.0 GHz quad-core processor & 16GB storage? I am NOT a tech guy and only use my Nvidia for runing K**I & a couple of related apps, nothing else. Was wondering how much speed (rough % wild ass guess) one would loose stepping down from Nvidia to the new firestick given similar usage.

The Firetstick OS is ugly and slow

The Fire TV Cube may be newer, but it has inferior hardware. It has 2gb of ram (50% less), its 32bit vs 64bit, has 1/3rd the GPU performance, and you get the god awful amazon interface, which is somehow worse than googles.

The shield can also do dolbyhd atmos.

I can't imagine paying for an overpriced fire stick just because its in cube form.

Dudes wanna talk about it being "dated", how 'bout you compare the features and functions with its competitors?! Read the thread, people commented on its edge over them.

I have a 2015, 2017 and 2019 pro models. The 2019 is the same as this deal.

Never had a problem with an update. All three work great. The AI upscaling on this 2019 model is so good I set my maxres on youtube to 480p and forgot about it for 3 weeks before I thought an image was a little fuzzy.

You may in fact install an older version from flash drive if you have a problem with an update.

All that having been said, while its still the performance king for android streamers, its basically the same thing with an old cpu and a maxwell gpu. It really needs an update. And nvidia has silicon that'd make for an excellent Shield v4. It's slated to go into the next Nintendo Switch.

But...Nvidia has already made some noises about high end gaming gpu's not being in their future because they make so much more selling AI products. So a niche product like this may just be uninteresting to them.
