In the market for a 55 non-OLED for mostly sports in the garage. Debating this one, but found this interesting in the Rtings review:

Update 08/09/2023: After running on the longevity test for eight months, this TV is now showing signs of image retention or potentially burn-in. It's not visible in most real content, but in near-dark scenes, like this 5% gray uniformity slide, the CNN logo, breaking news banner, and even some text is clearly visible. It's an unexpected result for this type of TV panel. We're looking into it more to determine the nature of the image retention.

Wish this was the Roku version on sale instead of Google TV and it would have been an instant buy for me.

The price is nice. Had me thinking for a split second: "Should I upgrade the TV in the room that no one ever watches". Heh, they need a way to trade in TVs, like people trade-in cellphones. At this point they are getting so cheap, TVs are landfill hogs from all the replacements.

Almost got me to spend $400. Thanks for the temptation. Good deal.

I wouldn't recommend making UI the determining factor for a TV. After a couple of years, you will want an external box anyway because of lag. You would set the TV to load the HDMI port where your box is connected on start-up, and the built-in UI wouldn't matter.
While I agree with your statement, I am amazed that my TCL 2017 Series 6 experiences no lag with its internal ROKU UI & Apps. I'm thinking a regular factory reset or refresh does wonders.

Having said that...I am kinda glad that they switched over to GOOGLE TV as I have slowly migrated to that over Roku due to Roku's lack of IPTV apps/services.

I have a 646 (Google) and have been happy with the UI. Generally I'd prefer Roku but this is good enough that I haven't bothered to run another device for streaming etc.

Is additional warranty recommended for this product? It's $80/5 yr
For $80 I'd say yes. I have a 6-series 65" purchased in 2018 and just this month (4 years, 10 months lol) the backlight started randomly going out. Other than that, zero issues, really pleased with it.

I have a TCL Roku from 2019 and have never had lag issues. I have a TCL Google from 2022 and I always have to reset it due to lagging.

I couldn't agree more. I never use built-in OS and would actually pay more than market to have an OS-less display again.

It's a very old TV by TCL standards so yes. It was their best tv at the time

Bought a few days ago, have an Apple TV 4k hooked up to it, everything is in dolby vision and looks amazing, colors look better than my 1200$ Sony.
Odd question but can you turn the TV off by turning the apple tv set off? I have an Android TCL and that doesn't work.

get an external box, any built in UI is going to degrade after a few years. The appletv supports Dolby vision for this and will continue to receive updates LONG after this TV does.
Seen it first hand- people will suffer using a crappy TV OS for years instead of buying a $20 Onn 4k box, Roku or Firestick. The built-in OSes are passable at best when new. +1 Get an external streaming device!

This or a 48" A2 for a bedroom Tv? Which would have better speakers? I currently have a 42" TCL that I got 5 years ago.

Would an external ROKU be much different than the built in one? Serious question, not trying to be a smart ass.
I tried a firestick and it was painfully slow.

This is an awesome deal ! This Tv is also a beast for gaming and streaming 4k content. I've also used this as a monitor just a tad too big. I have two LG Oleds and they just don't get bright enough. So I needed something with 120hz for gaming and much brighter. There was a bunch of choices but for price point this fit. The google ecosystem is plus especially if you use google as your hub. Last, I did have a flickering issue while plugged into my Xbox series X with HRD and Dolby turned on. After 2 weeks of "engineers" find a solution they did send me out a brand new TV.

Can't say I've used a Roku streamer on a Roku TV before. On a locked down and limited OS like that, you may not see much difference. Android TV/Google TV, yes, generally.
