Nonsense. Normal people who just use a computer don't backup data but anyone needing 18tbs knows how things work.

I would get this personally. While I don't subscribe to Seagate all being garbage, these WD that I've gotten have all been Helioseal drives (based on HGST designs) and have been cool, quiet, and fast. The initial ones were PWDIS which meant you had to tape the pin, cut it, or use an adapter, but the latest ones haven't been PWDIS so no issues.

Yes. If plugging into NAS, will not need tape.
It depends on what NAS. Off the shelf NAS like synology, then no issue. If DIY nas like Unraid or Truenas, yes

Could I use this on a security camera system?
For surveillance, you really want to use WD purple for high endurance and constant write. WD Purple is reliable. I mean, if you want to use a shucked drive white label drive for surveillance, you can by all means but you take the risk that the hdd may die sooner because it is not designed for constant write like WD Purple

any comment on windows chkdsk, or WD drive utilities?

thanks and repped you both for responding
Not much to comment here for me. I used to use chkdsk all the time but everyone's boot drive is SSD/NVMe now, so not so much anymore. Chkdsk was never a great utility but it did the job enough to get things going again.... sometimes. There are better tools IMO for most stuff chkdsk does, but it had the advantage of always being installed already.

I can't say I use any of the WD drive utilities routinely, but they can be useful for drive firmware updates and the SSD utilities are fine. About all I do with WD Data Lifeguard is the long test for a new drive, and maybe a short test here and there for drives I need to RMA so it will generate a code to give to WD. That doesn't happen often at all, but sometimes for clients. Most people have gone SSD though and drives this large are really somewhat of a niche market - mainly game, media, photo, VM, video, and maybe a few other storage things.

halo, this need cover pin to use as internal?
There are multiple versions of the WD HC550 drives so it's possible. Someone on here said they got a drive that supported PWDIS (and would need the pin covered for older PSUs) whereas others have gotten ones that didn't.

Yes I have a few shucked 18TBs manufactured in recent months. All need the 3.3v bypass. Not a big deal , just buy some cable on amazon for a few bucks to bypass it. I don't like using the tape method
You can just snip the pin too. Then skip the tape and adapters forever.

tbh I'd spend a little more to get a Seagate Exos drive since then you get an actual warranty for the intended use case (NAS). I bought two 20TB Seagate Exos X20 drives for $250 a few months ago, and the all time low is around $210. They'll probably go on sale again.

After WD's issues (first the SMR thing, then the more recent issue of flagging drives with warnings just because they were powered on for three years: https://www.pcworld.com/article/1...blems.html), I try to avoid them.
I thought the 3 yrs "expired wd" was only the case for synology. I only have segate on my synology and wd on my unraid.

Seagate drives are loud during seek vs. Synology fans. Wd is quiet vs. 60 bays server grade hard drives shelf. Zero comparison.

How you guys check if the drive good/bad?

Would reformatting work? Check bad sector (using windows)?

Or you use other specific software/tool?
I would full format the drive in the case. Usb fan pointing at the hdd case.

For synology, I would do a complete smart check before adding the drive to the volume.

For unraid, I would do a preclear before adding the drive to the array.

I like the capacity and value of this drive but the killer here is it doesn't offer password protection
The Western Digital apps/software will allow you to set a password.

Take a look at "WD Discovery" and "WD Security".

Not just Synology. It's part of Western Digital Device Analytics and any NAS that uses WDDA would show the warnings. I think they've all disabled WDDA as a result.

The Seagate drives don't sound loud to me at all, an in fact they're quieter than a WD Purple Pro I've got for my security cameras. I've only got 2 x 20TB Exos drives though, as I don't need more than 20TB storage at the moment.

Veracrypt is a fork of Truecrypt and the main one now.

Great deal, I hate to ask a question here but there is a ton of knowledge here.
I have a 11th Gen Dell micro, I'd love to use it in a raid format. Can I use a m.2 to SATA?
I plan on using unraid if that matters

You mean the Microsoft Windows took too many space?
or your hard drive spec is wrong?
The drive is 18 "terabytes." and 16.3709 "tebibytes." in windows.
Maybe you can get 18TB in Mac OS or Linux, it's the same space
