Nonsense. Normal people who just use a computer don't backup data but anyone needing 18tbs knows how things work.

I would get this personally. While I don't subscribe to Seagate all being garbage, these WD that I've gotten have all been Helioseal drives (based on HGST designs) and have been cool, quiet, and fast. The initial ones were PWDIS which meant you had to tape the pin, cut it, or use an adapter, but the latest ones haven't been PWDIS so no issues.

I know all HDs are like this, but I wonder if this will be fixed. They should only be able to label it according to usable space. Seems like a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.
Advertise space is raw space storage. It actually 100% honest and correct. Different files system take different spaces. There are a lot of different file systems, from windows nfts to fat32 to ext4 and everything in between.

What do you all test for and how before you Shuck this Drive? Which is the most reliable / best one you are looking for in this case?

You don't have to tape the pins if you shuck for the new ones? That's awesome

Anyone knows the noise level on these compared to something like the old 8TB drives? I know there are different versions inside but it sounds like most people are getting white label 7200rpm (HGST) drives such as WD180EDGZ, I was planning to replace two of old drivers with these but noise level kinda worries me now

I do a long smart test as well as a suite of badblocks patterns. Following https://www.truenas.com/community...esting.92/
However, I've already seen 52c on the drive inside the enclosure! Around 70f room temperature, and the enclosure was warm, not hot, to the touch.

I'm going to shuck it before running badblocks (takes 6-7 days to run) in hopes it helps the temps.

Once installed I try to keep my drives under the low 40s. Is it possible I got a bad one, or are others seeing similar temps?

They been repeating this since 100 mb hard drives.
Hard Drives just don't die instantly. I just had a Seagate 6TB fail pretty fast, it was down to 28% health and clicking, but I still had time to move the 5Tb of files off the drive in time.

Arright, this is a pretty smokin deal. But I'll wait until it's $199 on Amazon cause I'm not gonna pay a lot for this muffler and I want my 5% off Amazon store card credit.

Oh my sweet summer data hoarding child they certainly do; especially large USB external drives in my experience.

That's why you should keep all your important data on a relatively small hard drive and have it automatically backed up regularly via programs like Macrium Reflect [macrium.com]. (Seems to be no longer free but you can get an older version that is. I know I'm blocking my trusty free version in Windows firewall just to make sure it remains free; hopefully this will work).

IMO backing up easily obtained video media is wasteful and foolish. Think of it this way, by the time your hard drive fails that contains all your easily found video crap; encoding methods, quality and files sizes will be dramatically improved and you will probably want to procure replacements anyways. Please don't waste good money backing up insipid crap like My Mother The Car [youtube.com]; think of the poor cheap basterds laugh out loud

Well, everything dies, the question is when.

If your data does not currently exist in at least 3 locations, then it never existed at all.

20 backup's on site don't mean much when your whole place burns down. Important stuff should be kept separate, in multiple locations. Because like you said, HDD's die at random, often times with no predictors...... S.M.A.R.T monitoring is great, right up until your drive just fails out of the blue and then what? You'd better have it all backed up properly, otherwise, we learn the hardest way posible the meaning of the word 'loss'.

wow, the price is dropping. I got my WD 14TB last year at the same price and I only used a few TBs.

conclusion: NEVER buy more storage than you need.

I haven't bought drives in for so long but thinking of finally getting a synology. If I read some of the posts in this thread correctly, I shouldn't need to worry about taping/cutting a pin for a synology system, right?

Also, regarding warranty, does WD help recover data from the failed drive or are the claims usually just for WD to replace/repair the drive?

Or, always buy the most you can afford when on sale! Ain't no such thing as too much storage at a great price, only regret for not buying enough when it was on sale..... Just sayin. I paid this for the 16TB version last year. But I knew the 18 and 20 Terabyte variants were just around the corner waiting for their price to fall off the cliff. You know which one is gonna fall next, so you have only one question to ask. Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?
