Great machine, as long as you get one with reasonable backlight bleed. Backlight bleed is largely caused by the thin bezels, and the pressure from the machine's bezel pressure; a lot of these units (not all - I've seen a good one first hand) have bright areas that are even visible in a well-lit room when displaying black, at 50% brightness - example: watching a video.

I'd take this over the 2024 model that should be available in 6-months. OLED would be nice to get around their persistent backlight problems, but productivity-use still burns in rapidly on the latest OLED monitor displays, and of course the 2024 model has non-upgradable RAM (16GB is the base size for 2024, and may be all that Best Buy will get you for these sales), and goes from a magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis to plain aluminum. They also needed a third fan to help the limited cooling potential in the 2024 model.

IMO, this is the machine to get in a 14-inch today. Especially with G-Helper installed to kill off Armory crate, greatly dropping the idle power usage of the machine, and providing additional "undervolting." 5GHz all-core under CPU load is possible on this G14, at 78W CPU power draw. Of course this tapers off as TDP is pulled with the GPU loaded.
Asus please send the USA the darker grey/black versions of the G14!!!!
Was just coming here to post this. Great prices on open box as well. Starting at $829.99.

Following up with my experience. I'm on my 3rd unit now and it's still not "perfect". I don't care so much about backlight bleed as that's unavoidable, so that was a non-factor in determining returns.

1st Unit: Open Box - Excellent. Appeared to be in good working order, thermals ran really really warm, speakers buzzed badly. I was willing to overlook all of that as just "quirks" of the machine, but then I noticed there were some hairline stress cracks and damage in the finish on the front lower lip from the prior owner so I returned. I also didn't like that ASUS only provides 90-day warranty guarantee for open box and didn't want to gamble with that (even though ASUS support is terrible anyhow).

2nd Unit: Brand New. Figured I would go with a new unit to avoid any damage and the warranty issues. Upon opening, the holes in the top of the lid were very noticeably defective near the logo area in one corner - Unevenly spaced and quite noticeable from a few feet away. I didn't even bother to turn the unit on and took it back for exchange. At Best Buy, the associate plugged it in and could not get the unit to power on, so it appears I avoided a dud unit overall.

3rd Unit: Brand New (exchanged 2nd unit). Physically perfect, thermals much better, speakers don't buzz, backlight bleed acceptable. All things seem good. However, there is trackpad rattle that is a bit annoying. Meaning if I lightly tap to select something, about 50% of the time I get an audible "tap" noise from the looseness of the trackpad, even though I didn't push hard enough to physically click the trackpad button. Apparently this is also EXTREMELY common for ASUS laptops, I'm just not used to it and it feels cheap/bad. Many people mention adding electrical tape inside the machine to fix this issue, which I shouldn't have to do for a $1,500 laptop. My other laptops (surface book 2, surface laptop, and an old alienware) have never had this issue, regardless of trackpad material or size.

Given the QC issues I've seen in a small sampling of units, I'm VERY reluctant to exchange the 3rd unit and start over since everything is basically perfect except the trackpad rattle. I may just "live with it" rather than re-roll the QC lottery a 4th time.

Edit: Example of trackpad rattle from reddit (mine is not quite this bad) -> https://www.reddit.com/r/Zephyrus...is_normal/

Ewwwww. Mine was in better shape. Asus' non-warranty on open box and the battery degradation were the only reasons for me. Be sure to use some hand sanitizer after touching that thing!
I still have my vivobook from 2012...most people keep laptops beyond 1 year. Even if it had coverage, what good would it do you 3 years down the road?

Two reasons it makes a difference for me.
1. 365 days > 15 days. I can't state enough how many times I've experienced a hardware failure of a myriad of components after 15 days but before 365 days. I've been in the IT business for 25 years. A 1 year warranty is the minimum acceptable warranty in all circumstances.

2. A company that makes the decision to exclude refurbished/used/open box items from their warranty tells me that they don't value their customers or have faith it their own products.

Nice deal.

I've seen a few ROG Zephyrus G14 at my local Best Buy, and the display color temp is too cool, almost bluish. Anyone experience the same?
There's a color temperature slider inside Armoury Crate

Asus does not honor the warranty on open box, even if shown online.
They ask for a purchase receipt and then deny...unfortunately.

I don't know how asus does it with their warranty, but when I was setting up the laptop it said unclaimed warranty, the first buyer never claimed it. Maybe those are able to use the warranty in case ever happens? Time will tell, but for now it works perfect no issues at all.

I picked one up for $840 in "good" condition and could not tell from new. Seems perfect. It had six months left on the warranty and I could not register the warranty under my name/account since it was already registered to previous owner. Contacted Asus by opening a case. They reset warranty to a full year and registered it to my account.

Everything will be nice and good until you actually need to make a claim. Then they may ask for your proof of purchase. If you have a receipt that says "open box" they can and have denied claims past 90-days and there are many posts about this on reddit and other forums. Sometimes they don't ask for the receipt and you get lucky and skate by, but that's a gamble.

I had to send images of the receipt (which says open box) and of the laptop serial number, so Asus already has my proof of purchase.

There isn't anything to fight, MyAsus app shows warranty is Jan 2024 to Jan 2025 now. I would advise addressing the warranty reset with Asus on an open box right after you buy the laptop. If you wait six months, I don't know if they might balk. Even if Asus gives you static, go right back to Best Buy and validate whether they will advocate for you as a reseller on the Asus warranty or if Best Buy will assume the full year warranty themselves. But complete this within the 15 day return window, meaning start the process on first day. Full disclosure, my case with Asus was escalated several times internally and they asked for multiple doc's to validate I bought and have the laptop in my possession. They were very friendly and professional through the process. I am confident that I have a fully covered product by Asus with Best Buy as a backstop.
