I would recommend the G14 since I recently bought one myself, and I managed to upgrade the RAM to 64 GB using a 48 GB stick of "non-binary" RAM (16 GB soldered + 48 GB DDR5) from here [amazon.com]. The laptop also has amazing linux gaming support, and runs pretty quiet. I also liked the fact that the webcam is 1080p and supports Windows Hello through IR. The build is pretty solid, and the speakers are awesome as well. I had a 16 GB lenovo with soldered LPDDR RAM and quickly hit the RAM limits, so regretted buying it in the first place. I would personally recommend this one due to it's expansion possibilities, and especially if you do coding + gaming on a regular basis. The display is also plenty bright at 500 nits, and it looks great in sunlight (it also has a matte finish that is anti reflective, which helps diffuse bright light sources behind me).

In case you do plan to run linux on this laptop, check out the helpful linux gaming community here:

The G13 that was $850 has a Ryzen 7 7735HS. The 3 in that 3rd digit means Zen 3. The $999 model has a Ryzen 9 7940HS, which is Zen 4. The Zen 4 CPU and 4060 GPU in this model are significantly better than the Zen 3 and 4050, so well worth the $150 difference.

RAM on G14 is expandable to 48GB where as the Acer is soldered on and not expandable.

I'm literally swimming in laptops right now. I ordered an open box Good for $820. As great as my OLED slim 14 is, for $820 I can't resist.
Big mistake. This laptop sucks by comparison to the Slim.

I notice they have Fair, Good, and Excellent for $800, $820, and $840 respectively, so I'm just curious why you chose Good and not the Excellent for $20 more. I'm assuming the Fair version is missing some stuff, but these prices are so close together that it seems hard to choose.
So I had a silly reason - I will be out of town for the rest of the week and didn't want to worry about it being delivered and opting to have a "good" condition one held at a local store sounded best. But I actually decided to spring for the "excellent" condition version shipped and remembered my wife is going to be available to sign for it.

Well my Slim 14 32GB model I bought for $1140 new from Lenovo. I'm going to do some side-by-side comparisons with the G14 and see if it sucks more than the $300 I'll save buying the $840 open-box excellent model.

I do love the OLED, but do I love it $300 more? That's to be determined.

I appreciate the clarification and understand your answer. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a reason we'd be better off with the one in worse condition.

At that small of a price difference, I would definitely go with excellent if you can wait for shipping. Good and Fair condition are completely hit-or-miss. I've purchased Fair condition electronics that are mint and Good condition that are rough. It seems to be totally up to the person checking the laptop in from Geeksquad, maybe loosely based on a written rating system. I know that they aren't setting up windows and running HWinfo to determine how many hours are on the machine, or stress-testing it; so it's mainly about the cosmetics and if anything is missing. I tend to think the stores in more affluent towns have nicer condition "good" and "fair" models than those in the middle of an urban city, just based on my own experiences buying open-box from Best Buy.

Quick story: there was a price drop during the 15-day return period on an open-box laptop I purchased. Best Buy doesn't price match their own open box items. So I returned the laptop, which I purchased in "excellent" condition (it looked brand new with 7 hours on it). Turns out, later that day, that laptop popped up at that same store in "good" condition. Sure enough, it was the same exact laptop I had returned (the box had very particular markings on it) that was still in excellent condition.

The Acer has mini LED, superior GPU, 1TB, and better quality control. The RAM is faster at 6000mhz, whereas G14 has 4800mhz.

The Asus is what I own but it requires a lot of tinkering to get temps under control.
Get the Acer. I have this (g14) and like it but wish I had the specs of the Acer at that price. Wonder if it runs cooler and quieter than the G14.

I'd avoid this laptop open box. I returned two that I'm sure were considered excellent afterwards but had bad back light bleed new out of the box.

The Slim's OLED doesn't have G-sync and the video outs only do 4k/60Hz. The extra m.2 slot is awesome though.

The Acer with mini-LED doesn't have a 32 GB option so you're stuck with 16 GB forever.

HP Transcend's OLED also doesn't do G-sync. The upcharge for 32 GB (4070 model) is also $500 more.

Since I need 32 GB, the Asus had the best specs for my usage. Shame the memory is only 4800 MHz, but otherwise the Asus has a great all around package (specs, keyboard, speakers). My wife's 2022 G14 has been great, so I'm rolling the dice on an $841 Excellent open-box.

Was it backlight bleed or IPS glow? I ask because people often confuse the two. https://www.coolblue.nl/en/advice...eding.html

Some IPS glow is to be expected with mostly any IPS panel. I have a nice 1440p Gigabyte IPS screen that has a small amount of IPS glow, I rarely ever notice it. I don't use a screen at 100% brightness in a dark room so IPS glow is not an issue for me. Obvious backlight bleed though, I would not be happy with.

Bought one for my wife last Christmas. My complaints are the gritty texture of the laptop in the wrist area, the trackpad became spongey and noisey (according to the internet it's loose and can be diy fixed), and when you charge with USB-C, the laptop screen constantly flickers between "plugged-in" and "power delivery" states making it unsuable.
That power issue is the fault of your charger and not the laptop.

I was able to get a "open box fair" for 800.99 in my local store. It showed no signs of wear.
I've handled the slim 5 and this seems like it has slightly worse build quality. Trackpad feels less responsive.
Also, the fans blow hot air at the bottom of the screen which seems inefficient and possibly causing screen damage over long term.
Screen has worse clarity than the slim 5 oled but it is still nice and bright.
For 800 it was a great deal.

I used HWinfo (free) and checked the stats on the SSD. It's a lightweight but useful app for checking all sorts of cool things about your hardware.

HWInfo.com or Crystal Disk software. Both have limitations, but you'll get the jist. For instance, if I removed the original Storage drive and put my own, Crystal Disk wouldn't know.
