For an extra $100, it definitely is worth it for the M3 Air.

You get dual monitor support, a faster processor, better read/write speeds on a base model over the M2 Air, faster Wi-Fi, and better mics.

Think about it over the life of the laptop, $100 isn't as much over the course of 5-7 years. If you can swing it, I would spend the extra $100.
Agreed.

Why apple is dropping prices this low, I have to say economy is changing... Demand is slowing

The M1 is already 10x more CPU than 90% of people need. M3 is overkill by a mile. The dual monitor support should be a given at ANY price point. Apple artificially limiting M1 and M2 to single monitor is insane. Likewise, the storage speed difference will not be noticeable except in benchmarks and is especially irrelevant with a 256gb ssd. Nobody with such a tiny SSD will be transferring massive files around.

TLDR, 16gb/1TB should be the minimum spec for any PC in 2024. I'd take an M1 with 16gb/1TB over an M3 with 8gb/256gb any day of the week.
M1 brand new at that configuration would be hard to find since Walmart only offers the 8/256 model. Apple may have some on their refurb store, but it might come with a higher price tag like $1250 right now. 16/1TB at $1250 is very expensive for a 4 year old machine.

The idea of paying that much isn't something I'd be comfortable with. I went with the M3 Air over a M2 Air base myself knowing for an extra $100, I'd get well over enough for it to be worth it for me and I use mine for basic stuff.

Personally I agree.

But for many users, most of these extras have little to no value.

Most people will never use dual screens. For most users, M2, disk speed, and WiFi are already fast enough for the life of the machine. Better mics might be the most notable gain.

Spending $200 to go to 16gb of RAM will add more value for the average user - improving the ability to multi-task, and extending the usable lifespan of the laptop.
If people are spec'ing up, then the Apple refurb store may have the M2 Air with 16/256 for $1079 which is a nice alternative to paying full price since it comes with the same warranty and Apple does the refurbishing themselves.

I think 8gb is enough for most people. But damn 850 USD for an 8gb ram laptop in 2024 sucks

Yeah it sucks, but it gives room for the existence of things like 500$ Mac mini and 700$ MacBook air

Sure, 8GB may be enough for some people today, but it isn't enough for others, and the real issue is that it doesn't future proof the purchase. Even today, a small number of open apps will push an 8GB Mac to use disk swap continuously which is slower and will degrade the storage quicker. All the same, this is a beast of a machine for $850.

Amazon also has it. Is it worth the extra money for the M3 to keep it longer?

Best deals I have seen over the last few weeks are:

M1 MBA 8/256 at Walmart for $700
M2 MBA 8/256 at BB/Amazon for $850
M3 MBA 8/256 at Amazon for $1000

I think I gotta go with the M3, but all are great deals!

For someone who doesn't need the M2 and looking at M1 do you guys anticipate that the M1 will go even lower and by how much and when? (I am upgrading from a MBP 2015 and really just to browsing, YouTube/netflix, and depending on if I'm hybrid at work nothing extensive just Microsoft office.)

Waiting for $750 on this. Would be worth $850 with 16GB RAM perhaps.

M1 has been as low as $650 in the past, for certified refurbished on Woot. Apple certified refurbished are as good as new.

I found an open-box m1 for 600 on eBay a couple weeks ago. It had two charge cycles in it.

This is the same argument people use to defend the 6GB iPhone 14 Pro.

I literally had to go back to my Pixel 7 after trying the iPhone because the multitasking ability was simply non existent.

So if you use the Mac Air for more than basic web browsing, 8GB is also insufficient in 2024.

For perspective, I had a $400 HP laptop 14 years ago with 8GB RAM! It's pure lunacy to sell an 8GB product in 2024.

No, we're really not. Try using an 8GB M(x) Mac sometime. It's fast for what most people do on computers.

Sure, for the professional doing 4k video compositing, it's not sufficient, but they're buying a Pro machine to begin with. It's a silly statement.

And right on cue, you post with the same type of drivel that we all heard during the 4GB vs 8GB debate. Exactly what was mentioned in my post. Just as predicted. Rofl2

Another one.
Same thing was said about 4GB.
This is so predictable. The pattern of people defending Apple's memory rationing is hilarious.

No. Macs do not have some magic that makes 8gb good. In fact, Macs allocating system memory to the GPU means even less ram is available.

8gb is insane in a world where normal cell phones have that. 16gb has been the new standard for many years. 32gb is the new power user desktop standard.
