It is impossible to overstate the importance of measuring everything accurately before you pull the trigger on this purchase. These generally only go in one orientation relative to your garage ceiling, for example, and you'll need spacing to be dead on for it to work at all.
Do you have a floor above your garage? Should be fine in that case. Last time I looked into these if you have roof above your garage and it uses engineered trusses then these are pretty much a no go as the trusses aren't meant for that kind of load.
After nearly packing and putting over a dozen big boxes like that, I wonder when will one take it all out to get an item and put back all of that again. It defeats the time saving? Don't get me wrong I would love to have someone else do it for me! 🤓

That's an even bigger pain. Bunch of this stuff loose?

How do you suspect the trusses are holding the door? For example, I have an impact rated garage door (heavy). No floor above my garage, just a roof.

I moved my 2 of these saferacks from my old house to my new one and I cant remember them being a pain. So returning should be easy if you are not satisfied. Been on it's current location for 5+ years as well with nothing that would make me worry about.

Don't use these on trusses. Like the other commenter said, if you have a floor above your garage, your joists will likely be 2x10 or greater which would work. If you have nothing above your garage, it's most likely trusses, which in the instructions say it's fine but they really shouldn't have added that in there since the bottom chord of a truss is usually not engineered to be load bearing.

Well.. the 2x4's my 95lb TV hangs off of isn't exactly load bearing either. I think as long as folks use appropriate lags, and don't put ridiculous heavy crap on them it should be okay. I use my above head racks for stock piling on paper goods like TP and paper towels.

Just pay attention folks. Regardless of how well you mount something, you just consider worst case scenario if it was to fall, fail, break, give-way, etc.!

Can these be mounted if ceiling joists in garage were engineered as "non-load bearing" ?
Jeebus do people over think things here. It is some pretty simple calculations. Measure the joists. They are gonna be 2xSomething or engineered joists. Measure the length of the run to the center beam support and the distance between joists. Then you can calculate the rated load values. De-rate the load limits of the rack if necessary.

For example, https://awc.org/calculators/span-...d-rafters/
Assuming 12' span and the fully rated 600lbs/32 sqft with 24" joists, you'd need at least 2x8 joists (1-1/2" x 7-1/4" nominal size) to be fully rated for the load.

Go to a truss manufacturers website, they will have docs, most are non load bearing beyond putting drywall on the bottom of the truss. Here's one from Menards: https://www.menards.com/main/buil...c-5658.htm

Notice the load rating on the bottom cord is different than the top for this particular truss, for live loads it's 0lbs meaning you shouldn't put a garage door on the bottom. Others may be just enough to support the door.

Where do I find and how much does a structural engineer charge?
It would probably be easier to look in an attic and see if you can find the manufacturer printed somewhere on the truss and just contact them for the specs.

Over my garage is a bathroom and one spot I'm considering this for is under the toilet and the other is under the bathtub.

Am I looking at any potential issues?

Don't know why this is downvoted, it's the truth, I once saw an entertainment system full of dust and cobwebs sitting in a cart at the service desk…that (based on its color…whitewash) was probably 10 years old! Not to mention, we returned a mattress that was awful on our backs…ever try to stuff a memory foam mattress back in the box? 🙄

But back to topic…. I love these, I've been contemplating more since we are full right now and the wife wants her garage back…we've got kayaks and Christmas decorations on ours now, but could use more room.

Also PRO TIP: zip tie some motion activated led shop lights to the under side of these and you won't be sorry (my work bench is right underneath these racks and the light helps since the actual garage lights are partially blocked by the items being stored on the racks!

I have one of these and we store miscellaneous items and our holiday decorations on it(about 10 Rubbermaid containers). It has been great and held up well. I did install myself and I will add we do have a bedroom above our garage. This is a very good price for two. I only had room for one and wound up selling the other on marketplace.

Anyone entertain the idea of using the double 2x4s to create rails that those black and yellow storage totes slide into. Less expensive and totes only take up as much room as they are tall.

What is the cost to get these installed typically?

Any advice on choosing the "professional" installation vs local/yelp handyman?

While these are on sale, it's such an overpriced item. You can build something very similar or better with unistrut, bolts and your choice of lattice, for a margin of the price and custom to your needs and mounting points. It's one of those simple projects worth diy.
