I have a different model than this but I see the debate of auto vs manual brought up whenever a freezer deal is posted. They both have their pros and cons so it depends on your use case. Frost comes from water vapor freezing along the sides/coolest parts of the freezer. It's all about how often you're going to open it with humid ambient air around. I think those that don't like manual either keep it in a garage or truly don't like the idea of having to defrost it every 2-3 years. I live in Virginia and keep mine in my air conditioned basement. The humidity in my basement is typically around 45% and never gets above 55-60%. I open it maybe 1-2 times a week and try to close it back up quickly to minimize air exchange. After 2+ years I barely have any frost build up so I suspect it'll be at least another 2 years before I have to worry about it.

Given the extra cost and the risk of temperature fluctuations prematurely spoiling food it's not worth it for me to get an auto defrost. But your situation might be different. Chest freezers apparently have less of problem with frost compared to upright. I can't personally speak to that though.
I thought manual defrost was preferred over the auto-defrost freezers due to the heating coils in those causing nearby frozen meat to go bad prematurely?
$35 for 3 year warranty
Most of the negatives reviews are talking about physical damage during shipping

HELL YES!! I bought a frost-free garage-ready version a year ago to keep baby milk. It stops freezing every 3 to 4 months. I had to throw away 8 gallons of breast milk. that's much more valuable than grocery meat.

I bought a non garage one and zero issues living in the north east

I got this a few weeks ago and am so far happy. It's a fairly small upright freezer, but good for our small family for now.

I notice that the compressor seems to be running about half the time, to keep temperatures at about -2 or -3F on the "2" setting. The front door of the unit is also quite cool to the touch. Is that what other SDers who bought this are finding?

The unit only draws about 1 amp, so I think that's alright. But I'm surprised that the compressor still needs to run so frequently. I suppose undersized compressors means lower freezer cost.

Mine isn't cool to the touch but who really cares ๐Ÿคฃ

I have this model exact model and wife packed it tight, with opening it once per day or two the frost builds up considerably within a fee months but it's on top mostly and shelves (each shelf has cooling pipes going through them and can't be moved/adjusted). I did get extended warranty and it was $200 sale so as long as it works as it's done so far I'm happy with it.
To quicken defrost I stick baking sheet (to catch ice and dripping water) under each shelf and use hairdryer on lowest heat but highest air to speed up the defrost while breaking ice chunks as soon as they get loose enough and borrow a largest cooler from my family member to keep the contents frozen longer, takes about 20min or so to defrost the whole thing.

Save the packaging and expect a return - mine was dented and had broken legs and housing for them, so replacement legs/feet still wouldn't have helped. I'm going to get a different model from somewhere else. If it didn't arrive broken then I would have been happy with it, but I wish I listened to people in the other SD thread and passed altogether

Once a year you put the food in a cooler and let it melt. In a few hours you come back and restock it. How hard is that?

It's not that big. I just got mine delivered today. 2' by 5' tall, and subtract the compressor. It's maybe 1/3 larger than the size of a side by side refrigerator's freezer, but without the wasted ice maker space. You can easily pull out the food into a cooler or two and let it sit for a couple hours once a year. Not a big deal, and better than the wasted energy of the heating elements running weekly for automatic defrost, which always go bad and ruin the unit. As an appliance repairman for 8 years, easily 80% of service calls were due to the self-defrost not working.

Reviews scares me.
Just had mine delivered this morning. Not a scratch. Plugged it in and 3 hours later offloaded 1/3 of my chest freezer without any issues.

Also, supposedly the freezer is garage ready (per photo) - that's a nice feature that other freezers don't necessarily have.
All freezers are garage ready. I can explain it if you want, you see, refrigerators use the fridge temp to manage the compressor. When the fridge get's warm, it bleeds cool air from the freezer to cool it back down. If it is colder than the fridge setting in your garage, it will just keep bleeding off the cold air from the freezer, but the freezer will never turn the compressor on if it is also as cold as the outside temp in the garage. That is why you have a warm fridge and a barely frozen freezer with a refrigerator in an unheated space. A dedicated freezer only has one temp sensor.

If it is delivered by FedEx it probably means no help in carrying it inside (I am thinking basement)? Edit: nvm its shipping not delivery

I bought it at this price a few weeks ago Door seals tight and stays cold. Shipping was great no issues. I wish I had went to Costco and got the bigger one for 300. But it does the job

Anyone have an opinion on an upright vs a chest freezer. Have a chest right now. Stuff does get lost in the bottom

I have one that's upright and the other a chest. The problem with the chest is I have no idea what's at the bottom but because it stacks it holds more.
