About 10 years ago, they had an issue with WIDESPREAD faulty (short lifespan) capacitors.

The manner in which they handled that problem turned me forever against Onkyo (and FYI, I gave them MANY chances at retaining me as a loyal customer).

They couldn't be bothered to do the right thing. So... they are 'permanently banned' in my house & amongst my small circle of close friends.

BTW, I hope OP doesn't take my comment as me crapping on this thread... I'm just stating my own personal experience/facts & also my associated opinions surrounding those facts.

I don't wish any grief upon Onkyo or their employees. I truly hope that Onkyo has since changed their company culture on how they treat their loyal customers, especially when their is a KNOWN systemic problem affecting MANY of their (often premium-priced) products.

And one last thing... notice I just described their products as 'premium priced'.

This 'prepaid premium' is what ultimately made my decision to basically 'forever ban them' a lot easier.

You often pay a premium for a product not only because of the real (or perceived) quality... but also for the steps the company takes to 'make things better', regardless of the cost (w/in reason, obviously).

Sorry for the long post. And... good luck with your Onkyo product! : )

There is little excuse for a 120 watt, 31lb receiver to throttle during demanding scenes in movies. This is the exact and sole reason to spend $800 to $1600 on a higher end, quality HT receiver. All the technology to balance speakers in a room, and to set ideal EQ levels in every speaker, and then to experience receiver nannies throttle your dynamic headroom during the million dollar explosion scene on your 4k Blu-ray. I get Onkyo paid a heavy price for overcooking their output stage and frying HDMI boards. But rather than limit the micro second output, why not increase the size of the capacitors and the heat sink area?

I keep going between this and the Denon 3800...

I just can't pull the trigger on the RZ50 because I've heard it can't properly tune 2 subs and also has a global crossover... and I don't want to buy extra equipment just to tune my subs. Patiently waiting for a deal on the Denon that isn't a refurb.
I'm in similar position. In the market for a new AVR within this next year

I have a good history with denon so leaning towards 3800/4800 series. However I'm also curious about Dirac, which the onkyo has

I kinda also want to wait until next gen denon are released to see if they will include Dirac and also allow full 48Gbps hdmi bandwidth specs as I want to keep the avr for years if i can

I think Pioneer's version, the VSX-LX505, is the one that has the global crossover limitation, not the RZ50. However it is correct that the RZ50 does not have discrete sub control, its dual outputs share the same mono signal.

I have recommended this in prior RZ50 deal threads, especially if speakers are 4 ohm nominal!
There are many claims that there is no issue w/low impedance speakers. I wonder how many of these owners are volunteering that their system is powered externally? Wink
I have that exact scenario, all pre -out's tied to external amps. Works well, but when factoring price between the RZ50 and the amps, I could have just upgraded to a better AVR. Having said, it's probably one of the best AVRs you can buy at this price.

Highly doubtful that the next gen Denons will have Dirac included.

Don't forget that the major reasons why the RZ50 retails very similar to the 3800 is because of the following:
1) Dirac Full bandwidth license included - I'm sure this cost Onkyo about $150-$250 per unit produced. In other words, it would have retailed for cheaper w/o Dirac!
2) No SHARC chip included means no Dirac Bass Management or Bass Control = less cost
3) Based on the ASR review, there is reason to believe the amp is not as powerful as advertised. Only way to know is to remove the software protection and let it fly on 4-6 ohm outputs!

Technically Denon has Dirac also but you only pay for it IF you want to.
Unlike this, the cost is rolled into the price.

Denon offers both Dirac Live and Dirac Live Bass Control, this you only get DL.

Denon just came out with the 6800, very unlikely they will put out anything else this year.

Very unlikely Denon will include DL into their products in the future.
For one Audyssey is a competitor, 2nd it's very comparable RC so there is no reason to make people pay for two very good comparable RCs.

If Dirac Live is a top priority, you can just get this, it's a good price for it.

If good history is a top priority also and if DL is as great as people say, $350($240 in Dec) would seem to be a bargain to get both.
Not to mention the features you give up going with this especially if you find they are a benefit.

I have had this since release.
At full price it was the best AVR overall in terms of features, quality, etc.

At this price it's not even a think twice situation.

The only comprimise I made was this does not have Auro 3D and I really wanted to try that out.

Not much content for it, and its rare to see but I still wanted to try it.

At the time of release for this model NO other model had all the features of this and Auro3D so it was not really a compromise just a consession.

Did this happen to you or are you just repeating an issue another person out of millions of people reported as a minority?

I have driven this with 6ohm speakers to ear bleeding levels and not once has it ever had an issue.

Which 6 ohm speakers do you have and how big is the room?

Super deal! I paid $950 about two months ago, thought the price was great...
@iconian - it's 120 W/Ch @8 ohms, not 20 Smilie

That correction is fine but let's remember that is 120W/Ch against only 2 channels as most of these mass market AVRs tend to advertise!

120 W/Ch (8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, 0.08% THD, 2 channels driven, FTC)
https://onkyo.com/home-cinema/av-...rs/tx-rz50

FWIW, the ASR review did confirm that this was not only achieved but the RZ50 exceeded the advertised power in the 2CH benchtest at 136 W/Ch!

For reference, my nearly 20 year old Rotel RSX-1067 gave an honest 100W/Ch across 7 channels! That thing was a beast for its day!

Question - What could you get for $799 that has full pre outs and the same feature set regardless of the amp?

I ask because I'm sure people have 5+ channel amps with older processors that could use an upgrade (myself included)

How about the Pioneer LX505, it's gotten down to $649.

I have this. I'm. Happy with the sounds but I intermittently get hdmi handshake issues. Might be good for a month but after that they start up again and have to factory reset the avr. This does not happen when connecting my devices directly to the tv then earc back to the avr or switching out the rz50 for my old txsr805 with an earc adapter. Sent this back twice and they can't figure it out. Tried many different hdmi cables.
