I picked up the 85" QM8 a few weeks back when BB had this TV for the same price.

So far, we're absolutely loving this TV. No dirty screen effect or banding issues to speak of. It's super bright, which is great since we have it in a room with a large amount of natural light. We've been using it mainly to play games on PS5, but tried out a few 4K HDR movies when we first got it. Everything we've tested on the QM8 looked nice and vibrant.

I've read complaints about motion, but we followed Rtings' advice and turned all the motion settings off. Also heard upscaling issues the QM8 had when it originally came out, but TCL fixed these in a recent update.

I don't have an OLED so I can't compare with higher end TV's, but this seems like the best bang for your buck you can buy at the moment.

I also got this TV a week ago and I had the luxury of having Samsung S90C to compare it to, here's what I noticed:
- super bright TV for the money, brighter that Bravia 9 and any other Tv I ever had
- HDR looks amazing and very comparable to the Samsung OLED, but it lacks in skin tone and a few shadow details. You won't ever notice this if you didn't have another TV to compare it to
- Motion is fine, very similar to the Samsung, watched sports on it and movies and it does the job. You have to turn on motion settings but that's something you will have to do with any TV, also similar to Samsung
- color saturation: not 100% like Samsung but I would say 90%, again not noticeable without a reference Tv
- Dolby Vision: this is the biggest drawback of the TV, Dolby vision bright is not bright at all and you can not control the brightness in DV mode. I can control the brightness in DV mode in a Sony OLED but not in this TCL. One note, after having the Samsung s90c, I do not miss DV at all.

Value: this an amazing value for an 85 inch. No issues whatsoever. If you can wait till this time next year you might be able to get the 2024 and they supposedly fixed the specular highlights issues with DV in that one.

When you turn motion settings off, you still get the base/native 120hz, right? I don't necessarily need it higher than that (no experience) but would want at least 120hz.

Also, have you watched any American football on it? If yes, do you see streaks behind the ball when the ball is in the air during a passing attempt? Those little "tails" drive me crazy on my old TV.

Has anyone had a chance to check out the upscaling, etc. after the latest firmware update? I can't remember ever seeing a lower upscaling score in RTINGS but otherwise, this looked great for the price.
Ha, I saw that upscaling score and I was shocked lol. Hoping someone has positive experience with your query since that would be good to know.

One thing that worries me is that the TV only has ATSC 1.0 built in. It doesn't have the next gen ATSC 3.0 tuner box.

That means you have to buy a separate tuner (like back in the day when we went from analog to digital signals) box. Decent ones are $199.99.

HOWEVER, I read an article that broadcast companies have started to encrypt their ATSC 3.0 signals so that standalone boxes do not work successfully at all times to unencrypt the 3.0 broadcasts. I definitely do want 4k over the air (imagine sports!) broadcasts. The implication is that the broadcast channels want only the TV's built-in ATSC 3.0 tuners to be able to decrypt their channels.

If this is the case, and this TV only has an ATSC 1.0 box, and we spend $150-200 for a tuner box only for it to not work successfully, then that's a problem worth considering, imo.

I've been all OLED since 2017. Mini-LED is impressive and is definitely the best bang for buck. This is a great set at a great price. Nothing beats OLED HDR, but this is really, really good.

how about using it watch movie?
Depends on the movie. Dark movies with faster action and less blank spaces on the screen will look better.

Utter garbage upscaling and unwatchable motion. Believe me or not. But had it over a year. TCL agreed to take it back as they couldn't fix it.

I agree. It is generally well reviewed. But the people i actually respect talk openly about the upscaling and motion issues. It sounds like 2024 is much better. But still MILES behind Sony processing. Just waiting for a big sale on the B9 this year.

I've owned my QM8 for a year now. The pros are its bright and the software is smooth. The Cons are the motion sucks. During tv shows or movies where someone could be running around a corner or fighting and it becomes blurry. Even moving a head around. I remember watching Avatar on Netflix and witnessed it a lot. There has only been 1 update ever for this tv and it had nothing to do with the motion. You can change all the settings in the world and it doesn't resolve the issue. In Game mode, it happens a bit differently. It just becomes a noticeable white border around the objects.

Motion issues were talked about on AVS forum plenty, despite reviews saying "ITS AMAZING" Here is an example from a game. This is my 2nd TCL, both do it. Honestly wish I would've went with the Sony instead of being cheap. If this isn't going to be your main tv or for anything like a man-cave, then sure, go for it.https://imgur.com/a/obRPcex

how/where do you sell your old tv's when upgrading? no one wants to buy used tv's, there is no resale value. you can't sell online as shipping will be more than the sale price, thats if you can even manage to pack it.

So wait, motion issues is something that can be considered under warranty? Like, how do you prove its an issue? I don't think there is a tv out there that advertises perfect motion. I have a few days left of warranty, so I could use the guidance to get started.

I looked at your link--you're saying you're seeing ghosting/artifacting constantly with motion!?? That's so bad! Any way we can get a video link (GIF or otherwise) because this picture is terrible for the TV!

iirc its for 480p content. 720p and up is generally fine. It just doesn't handle old SD content well. If you aren't using the native TV apps what ever device you are watching on is probably doing most of your upscaling.

as far as motion handling goes.....the only brand that generally always does well is sony. even the samsung and lg oleds can't hang with sony's motion handling.
