Let's call this for what it is -- "used". You're buying a two year old used computer. One you can get a brand new one of the latest model (with much higher specs) for $500-600.

The price for a new one is so cheap ($499 at Apple education store) … with much better specs (twice the RAM) … it makes no sense to buy this at a $299 price point.

Why? The gap is still 40% and there's a lot of people who just want an office/browsing Mac and realistically don't need the extra ram.

Its a good price sub 300, but a true deal under 200. Sub 300 is/will be the going price for any Mac without 16gb RAM, except laptop which will be sub 500 and 400 soon enough

you get a higher max clock rate (+800 mhz), +2 efficiency cores, and +8 GB of ram, 1 year warranty, for another $200-300. is this worth it? exercise left to reader.

i feel this open box deal is perfectly fine for light-normal day to day usage or if you want to use it as a HTPC / home server type deal

also probably cheaper than any NUC / Chinese mini pc you'll get

8gbs ram is too low, I fell 2 years ago for the novice comments about, " on the M2 you don't need to worry about the ram - 8gbs is plenty" praisers, like do they even multitask, or have more than 4- browser windows opened? I just traded in my m2 8gbs MacBook Air for the 16gbs m3. Don't get 8gbs unless you're limited on whatever you do.

Oh no way, EDU Apple is $499 for the M4 with 16GB. It's a no brainer for $50 difference going thru the EDU route. the extra 8GB alone was worth $200 on the M2 Mac Mini for the upgrade.

Browsers start heavily tasking 8GB devices nowadays. Absolutely useless from a professional standpoint too - almost everything uses some kind of AI these days and it needs RAM. Get the iPad Air for basic tasks and USB it to a monitor or a TV, it'll do the same plus you get the portability. Apple missed the AI opportunity by flooding their consumer base with 8GB devices, now they'll need to trade in and discount their latest tech to catch up.
I'll start by saying I haven't used a mac in a while, but on Windows, I'm an IT professional and can run many tabs, my IDE, multiple screens, and be in a video call no problem

The idea of what the regular person needs for computing is extremely exaggerated. I agree that 8GB is the minimum, but you can do a lot before you absolutely need more.

Didn't M2 Mac's use a single chip for the 256gb ssd? It was slower than the previous M1 that used dual chips/channels. The new M4 256gb went back to dual chips/channels again.

This. I bought a cheapass dell last year with 8th ram (i5 I think) as a second laptop for my wife. She has 3 browsers running, all with multiple tabs along with Ms office apps open all the time. No issues. I'm thought Macs work better than pcs. I guess not..
