When that happens, nobody will truly own their movies ever again.

I know someone who purchased 8000+ movies on Vudu (Now Fandango). What happens to that extremely expensive collection if Fandango ever goes out of business?

It's unfortunate and short sighted that people prefer convenience over actual ownership.

Not quite sure what you're going on about? Blu-Ray is 1080p native resolution which in my (and I'm sure others) opinion is hardly perfect. 4K Ultra HD has native 4K resolution. "Filters" aside (not sure what filters you're talking about...upscaling?) I'd rather watch a 4K Ultra HD disc than a blu-ray.

In any case, there is a much less expensive Panasonic 4K Ultra HD player that is low on bells and whistles that I snagged for $123 at BB [bestbuy.com] (open box excellent). Reviews say it does what it's supposed to -- play a 4K disc well, but is a minimalist player. It does state it does 4K upscaling, but not sure it does the same quality as the 820 and the 420. I'll have it in a couple days.

Do you think this would get lower as $249.99? I want this but don't like the price. I use PS3 and Xbox Series X to play blu Ray movies
If you don't need Dolby Vision then check out the Panasonic UB420, I think it's $200-$250. The UB420 doesn't have Dolby Vision but has the same internals and picture quality as the UB820.

I'm not going to tell someone else what to do with there money but let me understand someone. You're spending $400 to put this is in the closet in case your current player breaks? Are you planning to put it in your will?
There are two examples I can think of off the top of my head of products I have in "storage" for when something happens to the one I'm using. The new version of one is twice as expensive and offers me no advantage, and the other is no longer produced. I would not want to be without either.

Yeah whats the difference between this and xbox player?
Dolby Vision support and a helluva good upscaler for DVD and Blu-ray content. I love mine.

Trying to follow this thread and watched a Linus video linked before on this topic.
If my TV doesn't support Dolby vision, and I already have a Xbox Series X, is there any reason to get a UB820 or UB420? I primarily only own 4k uhd discs

Bluray players are slowly vanishing from the market altogether. Some folks are buying it as a backup once manufacturers cease to make them.

Haven't looked at bluray players in ages, but why is this so expensive?

BR players were like $100 years and years ago...
I think because this plays 4K Ultra Blu-ray disks.

This only applies if you're not doing any upscaling and if the player / display you're using supports all the disc features. Some cheap UHD BD players don't even support Dolby Vision and instead use the HDR10 fallback. The fallback HDR and DV will not look the same. And, if you're playing a disc that's not in the native display resolution, the upscaling can vary substantially between players.

So, yes, the player really can make a difference.
One needs to remember that a better-quality panel makes a lot more difference than a better blu ray player.
This applies to HDR10 versus Dolby Vision as well
Rtings did a comparison and their findings agree with my eyes..ie..by far the most important link in the chain is the TV in regard to video quality

I own this player and have for a few years now
This player was in my main media room until I tried to play Nosferatu on 4K disc recently
I was experiencing 3-4 sound dropouts about every 20 mins
Pulled it out and connected the $99 LG UBK90 refurb player. Connected it to a Sony A95L
Beautiful ,to my eyes, and no sound drop outs!!

Agreed...and there was clearance, and open box deals galore. I took advantage of many back then
There are only a few manufacturers left...so not competition

The Sony player worked for me much better than this Panasonic model, even though most reviewswould tell you otherwise.

This model had more skipping and would not pick on Dolby atmos.

Thanks, bullying Dolby Atmos is one of the few joys in life.

How'd the Sony compare when it comes to teasing Dolby Vision?

I never appreciated the crazy hyperbole of various pieces of av equipment. This one lived up to the hype for me. Playing blu ray on a 4k screen...looked like native 4k, unbelievable. And this on an 85" screen about 7' away.
