5TB WD Easystore External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive Expired

Isn't this a better deal given it's the passport for $9 buck more?

If one needs the hardware encryption and an extra year of warranty, yes it will be a better deal to some. For others shopping on price or per TB price they may see the portable Easystore or portable Elements, both currently at $99.99, to be a better deal for them.

Really though if one doesn't need a drive right this minute, one should think about waiting as both the 5TB Easystore, 5TB Elements and 5TB My Passport portables have been slightly cheaper in the recent past.

Example: 5TB My Passport was $94.99 iin Feb at NewEgg (slickdeal thread). And similarly the 5TB elements was also down to $94.99 at NewEgg in Feb (slickdeal thread). And there are a couple of slickdeal threads on the 5TB Easystore portable being down to $89.99 or so in October, November and December of last year.

is this a good gamedrive for Series X? I'm not buying a 1TB SSD for $220

My understanding that this would be great for series X, but only for older games. If it's a NEW Game made for series X, then you would have to put it on SSD.

Consider your self very fortunate. I've lost quite a few over the years going all the way back to the very first "hard drive" I used, a 10MB Quantum Hardcard back in the late 80's. Used many brands over the years all eventually experienced failures. Some within a year, others five or more years later. Some brands failed more quickly than others. Maxtor was one brand that seemed to fail quite a bit faster than others. Have had a WD 1TB Blue fail quickly, while one Seagate Barracuda 320MB drive from 2006 is still puttering along. I do have laptop/2.5 inch hard drives fail more consistently than their 3.5 inch desktop counterparts. Out of several laptops over the years only one of their drives (since replaced with SSD) hasn't started to fail (bad sectors). Have had the hard drive click of death more than once from several brands.

At the end of the day, after all is said and done. One has to decide how important their data is, then decide how much time and money they want to invest in preventing that data from being lost/unrecoverable. Hard drives are cheap, recovery services absolutely are not. Cloud storage has been a significant advancement but it too comes at a cost and with its own issues including being data mined by the hosting company. There will always be demand for local storage so for now, hard drives and ever increasing SSD storage sizes will be in demand. Portable drives like this meh deal will still be in demand. For now hard drives are significantly cheaper (with their faults and limitations) than SSD drives/storage.

At least between the ES and MP, not at all. The MyPassport has better casing, better encryption, better warranty, and lower failure rate. I wouldn't touch an EasyStore drive again after four failed on me.

WD easystore is a renamed WD Elements requested by BestBuy for sale at BestBuy.

In response, I could also say it's a hard drive, but I won't stoop to the same level of condescension.

As you know already, I'm not questioning what ES is marketed to be similar to; I'm disputing the quality of the components used despite their similar appearance, and basing that opinion on repeated experience.


It happens so often, that WD has surely undermined both lower tier lines' salability to all but the most casual of customers. I'm not sure who wouldn't hold out for an MP but for clearance deals on smaller capacity Elements, and even then it really ought to a steal to be worth hitting that lower capacity ceiling.

I said nothing condescending. You wondered why they don't carry easystore. I said it's because easystore is made for sale at BB. I didn't put down Elements or BB.

I've seen 2.5" easystore and elements that are identical.

FWIW, my My Passport died right after the warranty expired. My friend's easystore is many years past it's warranty and still going strong.
