All that being said, I cannot recommend getting this game more.. it's such a GREAT introduction into the Gloomhaven world. The first few introductory levels really teaches you step by step how to play. They did a great job slowly increasing the difficulty with each scenario. By about scenario 5, you'll be playing the full game and comfortable with all mechanics and having a blast.
With normal Gloomhaven, I would recommend reading the rule book/Reddit/watching YouTube/etc and spend a few hours of homework before the first campaign. With Jaws of the Lion, you can pretty much just open it up and start playing ~30 minutes after initial setup/getting the right pieces opened and everything. Nothing else required.
There are less pieces and setup required with Jaws of the Lion, so it's much easier/manageable to play this than the commitment required with regular Gloomhaven, so there's also that. We found that a scenario takes ~15-25 minutes from setup to packed back up.
Last comment on this… original Gloomhaven became double date night for over 40 weeks worth of date nights for us. We paid ~125 for the original Gloomhaven which equates to ~3 bucks a date night. Every play after that would have lower the average. And if we really wanted to, we could have asked the other couple to pay half and it'd cut that price in half. We throughly enjoyed the time spent and weren't ever bored with all the storylines and decision making and choices, so it was a fun double date night for a few bucks. TOTALLY saved us monies while giving us awesome experiences altogether.
With Jaws of the Lion, you get ~20-25 game setups for $1 per play… pretty unreal deal and would say just try it out. Normal Gloomhaven has been number one on boardgamegeek for so long for a reason, and this format follows it very closely with improvements that we really enjoy.
Hope this helps someone on the edge just give it a try!!
