Uhhh yeah. This is slick. I don't know who needs to hear this, but here's my two cents (And for those robust gamers that already play GH, forgive me this is more for our casually interested (or partially invested) friends)

If you go back through SD searching for deals on GLOOMHAVEN (A monster of a game) you'll see a LOT of people snagged it for $75-85 at various times. I think retail is $149 and you can buy it for $100-120 pretty regularly. It's a large game (literally 21 lbs and also figuratively) that takes months if not a year or two to play. It was the #1 game on BoardGameGeek for multiple years with good reason, but here's the kicker... I know some people buy Gloomhaven and it sits there. In their house. On a shelf, or in a cabinet. Some people open it, or watch gameplay tutorials, or just need someone to teach them. Learning to play GH is a steep hill, which is too bad because it's fun. But for a lot of folks, it is the centerpiece of the "Shelf of Shame."

Enter GLOOMHAVEN: JAWS OF THE LION. This is a sleek, streamlined Gloomhaven that has all the feel of the original game. This box has about 30 new scenarios (The full GH is closer to 100), and packs WAYYY more value inside than you'd expect. But most importantly: Where Gloomhaven is a learning curve of going up a cliff, JOTL (for short) is a nice on-ramp to the GH highway. It will take you through scenario after scenario, starting with the most basic of the basics. It's like having a friend guide you. It then adds another couple of rules. Before you know it, you ARE playing Gloomhaven. Hopefully this helps someone!
At under $20, this may be the best value in all of strategy games

It's not that slick a deal. It's 25% off for anyone who hadn't used the discount. Most users will have already signed up for Circle anyway. It's better as a mention on b2g1.

Really good at two, but not really a bad player count on this one.

I haven't played it myself, but BGG does say here it's best for 2? 8.5 is a decent score too. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardga...-jaws-lion

I've played JOTL 2 players, a few scenario with 2 players, and it was ... ok ?

I played the original game with 4 players , and I can say that while the game took longer with more people, I tend to enjoy it just because we have more varied strategy.

This is purely subjective as I see board game playing as my "social" activity, since normally I wouldn't have go out just to hang out with people. But game mechanic wise, I don't see any problem with just 2 people, since the game itself scale based on number of players.

Bought it last year played it a couple of times. Setup is tedious and takes forever. Kids lose interest soon. Gameplay is pretty uninspiring. Not much strategy needed. But it's made unnecessarily complicated. In the end it's move spaces equal to dice + a random number. It's still sitting on the shelf. Don't buy if you don't have teenagers and can leave it open to come back.

Ty OP! Been looking for a reason to buy this game (particular GH proper), but sounds like JotL is a better springboard into this lore. Many thanks to @kkeene for his feedback as well.

There are...no dice in this game??? Setup in this game really doesn't take that long but we've streamlined all the fiddly bits down to using an app to manage the details. I think i have it down to maybe 5-8 minutes.

I need to try that app looks like. Haven't heard of it before. Reg dice I must have forgotten about it. It's been that long lol. But movement is a combo of one number and that red blue diaper. Forgot what's it called

Bahahaha "red blue diaper". I see what your referring to now. Ya, so the app makes all that go away. I use Gloomhaven Secretariat. It's great. The only thing I physically get out for the game is the board, the monster standees, any tile overlays as needed, and the mercenary stuff (i.e. items, standees, etc). The app manages monster cards, movement, initiative, and all attack modifier decks. When we play, we just set it up on the TV. It's a great setup to minimize and manage all the minutia.

What's funny is that diaper totally fits. Ya, I just put the app itself up on the screen. Shows all the detail for the game. Players pick their cards for the round, you put in your initiative, the app reveals the monster cards for the round and orders players and monsters in initiative order, and you start the round. It tracks all the other little stuff like elements, status effects, does the math for the movement, etc. I actually totally forgot that's how the monster movement is calculated (monster base movement + ability card movement) because the app just does all that and displays what their actual round movement is. Ya, it's a great game. We played it once with all tiny bits after which i vowed to find a way to manage all that better because it's a lot and is very time consuming.

We played without the app for the first 5 scenarios. That gave us a good understanding of the time consuming "fiddly bits" - which is a fair description. Next we started using the app, which was a crazy good upgrade and really freed up our playtime!! But I think we had a better understanding of the app BECAUSE we had used all the tokens at first, if that makes sense. But yes, once you get started, switch to the app, it's a must-have.
