Thanks. Just bought for my 7.2.4 system. 140 inch screen. My son turns 12 in a few weeks and I'm going to introduce him to LOTR with this.
Buy him the books to read first! The LOTR EE are one of the coolest renditions from books to screen. Peter Jackson hit it on the nose from how I imagined while reading as a kid to the movie at the theater, but there was a lot of the back story of the characters missing. I would annoy the crap out of my family explaining why so & so said such & such. Then we got the EE which filled in a lot of the gaps!
Anyway, I strongly urge you have him read LOTR before introducing him to the motion picture!
No sorry these are 4K/UHD disc and they won't play on your Sony Blu Ray player.

I'm willing to bet that discs smoke streaming quality… plus this has both versions.

It's like watching completely different movies, though. The 4K is nice, but where these movies really get a boost is the HDR/Dolby Vision. They're so much more vivid now. It's a huge difference from the regular buy-rays.
For example:
the Bourne 10 disc set = $30.50 or $3.05 a disc
Jurassic park 10 disc set = $36.00 or $3.60 a disc
the Fast and the furious 16 disc set =$43.00 or $2.69 a disc
Even if you were to say this is not a fair comparison because there are not 6 discs in these case sets , lets look at a few 6 disc sets
The Purge 6 disc set = 18.40 or $3.06 a disc
Back to the future trilogy 6 disc set = $25.60 or $4.26 a disc
Shaun of the dead/hot fuzz/ worlds end 6 disc set =$21.60 or $3.60 a disc
$10 a disc is at least double what a good deal would be
I did not see the (9) so it's $ 6.67 a disc still almost double all of these other sets. Still overpriced especially since this set is being sold for $40 elsewhere.
