FYI I bought a NEW g14 in this exact same model, it died within 3 weeks-- no power no lights. Others have reported similar issues.

It's a great laptop but QC on these is terrible. Suggest you buy with your CC extended warranty.

Bought this when it released and it's been great. Batter life is amazing and it's powerful enough to get me though any task i throw at it, including running multiple Virtual machines at the same time. Great power and a really great price point

cant do machine learning. if you want to run tensorflow or pytorch, you need a nvidia graphic card.

For ML part, PyTorch now has the beta version of ROCm backend, though I have no idea on the performance. This version now only works on Linux. You can do the same inside WSL on paper, but it seems to be painful at this moment. In fact, not too long ago, even getting it work on Linux was a pain in the ass. Microsoft's pytorch-directml basically doesn't work....
Also, the RT cores are a big factor apart from CUDA.

This is why I really want to get the 2020 version of this laptop, instead of this one. I have clusters and workstations to use, but it will be surely nice to run some toys models on the laptop.

Most of that made no sense to me. Is it the cpu or gpu that can't do ML?

What did the 2020 models have that these don't? Nvidia gpu?

Struggling to find a 14" or 15" 16:10 thin and light laptop with webcam with either an AMD or 12th gen intel cpu and nvidia gpu.

I really wanted to buy this even at full price but lots of negative reviews on the BB site. Most problems are with the screen, heat and quality control issues. When my BB had it on display I went to check it out, I went back about a week later to buy it and the one on display had a dead screen. It's too expensive to take a chance on getting one without issues.

All CPU's can do ML, but you are not going to use it. A top end server CPU will probably be beaten by an entry-level GPU for large linear algebra operations.

As I said, AMD has ROCm now. So technically speaking, you can do ML with this laptop running with GPU. However, this is only possible with Pytorch on Linux and in beta version. I don't think you will want to use a Linux distro as your main OS or dual-boot and possibly face a bunch of issues with ROCm.

The previous version of this laptop uses RTX 3060. 15'' version has 3070 as well.

I'm actually looking for the same thing as you. As my work laptop's webcam got disabled, I have to bring a usb camera with me anyway. 2020 version isn't a big problem to me.
