Guess my question is burried in the posts, want to ask again for buying a Macbook for my college kid to ungrade his 2017 MBA. Should I go with this Bestbuy deal or buy him a MBA with m1 chip for $900 with $150 Apple gc, or even the MBA new m2 chip for $1100? Thanks for helping me make a final decision, I know very little about Apple stuff.
depends what your/his priority is

cheapest price - m1
best portability - m2
best performance - m1 pro

for "best performance" you only really need that for super heavy things like video processing or heavy data (eg, programming). you won't notice a difference for regular things like browsing or email

FYI, the $150 Apple gift card is completely non-refundable once you receive the computer. Even if you return it before 14 days, for no fault of your own (ie speaker stopped working), they will only refund you the amount minus the gift card, so you essentially buy yourself a giftcard.

My wife and I both have MacBook Air M1 8gb/256 that we scored for 6xxish open box with 1 charge cycle each when they were a lot newer. My computer gets used everyday for work and is perfect so I don't have to charge it during the day (I don't use it full time but for sales). I also use photoshop on it and it can lag when using my a7r3 files (40mb each) but not terribly compared to my old windows computer that had beefier specs.

My wife edits small videos (for instagram). She can complain every now and again at lag but not very often. I am going to buy this for our photoshop and video editing purposes and because I can make a little money off my m1 air at the same time.

Long story short, the M1 Pro (14" or 16") is way better with about everything other than portability. But how much do you trust your kid going to college to not break the screen as all kids are different.

Many folks say that this Pro is better, because the two Airs you mentioned only have 8gb/256gb, which is pretty bare bones.
thanks a lot.

I personally have never used any of my Costco warranty. But I can tell you if this was me I'd buy it at BB and get apple care. Apple care itself is well worth it if/when it is needed. Especially if you are close to an apple store.
Just got it. Ready for pick up.

The 14" MBP is $700 difference in price (with taxes) vs the MacBook Pro 13.3" Laptop - Apple M1 chip - 8GB Memory - 256GB SSD - Space Gray. Is the $700 worth the differences? TIA!

Here's link to the deal thread I posted about sales tax holiday - for NJ, tax is exempt on computers with sales price up to $3,000; accessories up to $1000.

Costco is quirky -- you need to send an email them to request the tax refund -- Expand the OP for instructions. Happy BTS Shopping!

I have a 2011 MacBook Air that I use while sitting in my recliner, with the Air on a pillow on my lap. I am trying to figure out if this MacBook Pro, which is about a pound heavier, will feel too heavy on my lap. Anybody have any thoughts on this?
If you have not held both, the extra weight is very noticable. Not subtle at all.

Depends on your tolerance
