Not sure where you're coming from on this. Intel draws 300W on open test benches just to top AMD's gaming on chips that actually hit those speeds in people's normal machines. (Most prebuilts with Intel will actually not beat AMD because you need exceptional cooling or they throttle). So AMD made this ONE chip that could beat Intel using tech that Intel can't match.

Now when I see an Intel chip actually win in gaming at 125W power envelopes, I'll concede the crown to Intel. But AMD does need to get better at lying...ahem...I mean marketing. Just release a 600W chip that runs at 7GHz and needs phase cooling, then act like your chip is the fastest stock chip. That's nearly what Intel is doing. This CPU is very strong in gaming. Neck and neck with the latest CPUs in certain games.
Promo code works with the new AM5 stuff also.

Better than neck and neck. It's hands-down best overall at gaming.

You'd have to hand pick titles to find a game that it isn't the strongest in. Plus, you can cool it easily with air.

If your not going to do a build for at least a year, is this still a buy?

Have a 2070 Super and AMD 5 3600 and riding it out for a bit

Only because AMD is going to double dip because the new cpu's don't have the v-cache and next year you will see some x3d dropping. They are just greedy.

No. I can't recommend building a new machine with this. It's the BEST gaming upgrade for an existing AM4 Ryzen build. I'll probably upgrade my 3600X to it in a year or two.

If you're building in a year, you'll probably be best with Intel's Raptor Lake (about to be released) or more likely, the 7000 series Ryzen X3D chips that will come out at the start of 2023. Those newer 7000 series X3D chips should be the best gaming chips, unless Intel does something awesome with Raptor Lake next month. Even then, "best" Intel chips are literally rated to 350W now (https://www.tomshardware.com/news...turbo-mode). You'll have a hard time finding a cooler rated to dissipate more than 250W.

I made this exact decision last week and pulled the trigger. Sounds like you already have an AM4 motherboard and this is the best gaming CPU you can put in it. It'll be enough CPU to support even the new video cards coming out this week and next year without being a bottleneck. If you really want s whole new build in a year then just wait, if you just want a new video card and are ok waiting to rebuild in 2-3yrs, then get this CPU.

The 5800x3d is going to give 90%-95% of the GAMING performance of those next gen chips for way less than the next gen chips. If you are okay with being in the top 90 out of 100 then build with this chip.

Depends on the other parts in your system, as well as what level you want to have your settings at, and if gaming is your main goal. If you game, and have a high end gpu and want to game at high settings, then you should consider this chip. If you do more than gaming, there are other chips to consider.
