Not sure where you're coming from on this. Intel draws 300W on open test benches just to top AMD's gaming on chips that actually hit those speeds in people's normal machines. (Most prebuilts with Intel will actually not beat AMD because you need exceptional cooling or they throttle). So AMD made this ONE chip that could beat Intel using tech that Intel can't match.

Now when I see an Intel chip actually win in gaming at 125W power envelopes, I'll concede the crown to Intel. But AMD does need to get better at lying...ahem...I mean marketing. Just release a 600W chip that runs at 7GHz and needs phase cooling, then act like your chip is the fastest stock chip. That's nearly what Intel is doing. This CPU is very strong in gaming. Neck and neck with the latest CPUs in certain games.

Is it the best overall upgrade for an AM4 build (coming from a 3600)? I'm more of a console gamer, but I wouldn't mind a boost in performance if I just have to drop the processor in & it can be air cooled.
Yes and yes, just double check your mobo's bio's updates before you try to install. and check that your memory is atleast 3600mhz

If your not going to do a build for at least a year, is this still a buy?
No. A year from now it will either be cheaper, or there will be something faster for the same money. Never buy the hardware until you need it.

Worth the upgrade from a 5600x?
That's what I'm doing, but my 5600x will be going to a friend. I wouldn't say "worth it" if you're gaming above 1080p resolutions, but I think I'm going to hang on to this system for a long time. Rocking a 6900xt now, but I think I'll skip next gen. I think still have enough CPU to drive games at 4k with the following generation GPUs

I have a Lenovo y700 with an i5-6600HQ and an Nvidia 960M and a 250GB ssd that's full lol.

I have a microcenter 30 minutes away.

Clearly I need to build a new desktop. I've never built one before. I've been eyeing the 5800x3D for a long time. But so long that all the next gen stuff is coming out. I've been waiting out the ridiculous GPU market.

Can anyone give me a nudge in either direction for New Build - 5800x3D or next gen?
Was debating waiting to do all this on Black Friday.
This all comes down to personal preference...

For me, I had an existing AM4 socket build that I wanted to keep going for the next 3-4 years so I upgraded my 3600 for this, and will maybe upgrade my GPU at some point in the next 6 months... But that's specifically because I DIDN'T want to rebuild the whole thing from the ground up.

In your case, It's probably worth it to wait until Black Friday to see what deals come out. Having the choice between 12th and 13th gen Core and Ryzen 5000 or 7000 chips will give you a TON of flexibility...

Only consider getting this if pairing with at least a 3080/6800xt. Anything less GPU wise, 5600 to 5700x. Don't spend more than $10 extra for a 5800x vs a 5700x. Even then, because of the lower TDP, the 5700x is still probably the better buy.

Though this might drop lower depending on stock, under $400 after tax is what I have been looking for on this one. In for one. I am a big WoW player and this CPU is a bit of a game changer for crowded areas where frames drop to shit, even on my already strong CPU.

I could be wrong, but this chip is so strong that I don't see it dropping to $200 at retail. It's become something of a legend in its short life span. It beats the 7950x in several benchmarks for gaming and I would expect its resell value will remain strong for several years, as the AM4 platform is very popular and lots will be looking for a drop in upgrade. And of course, for me (or anyone on AM4) to switch to the Intel or even AM5 platform, it would require me to commit to a new motherboard and possible new RAM.

Yes. I think a lot people with Zen 2 are looking to end AM4 with this guy. Basically two-gen upgrade.

Even with new processors coming out this is still a good buy. Excellent performance, especially in gaming.

Can still benefit if you're willing to wait until new X3D lineup comes out (Q1 probably) though. This will probably get cheaper, and there's a chance they will do a 7600X3D which would be a mid range powerhouse.

Barring a great deal around BF, I'll wait until the non-X chips come out. By then we should know most of what we need to about the foibles of these chips and chipsets.

This. Look at the new benchmarks for the 7000 series and 5800x3d still beats the 7000s on most cases. After the nvidia 4000s come out it will show even more. At this point this cpu can't even be tested to it's full gaming capacity because it's the GPUs throttling in most games, not the CPU.
