Now when I see an Intel chip actually win in gaming at 125W power envelopes, I'll concede the crown to Intel. But AMD does need to get better at lying...ahem...I mean marketing. I have a microcenter 30 minutes away.
Clearly I need to build a new desktop. I've never built one before. I've been eyeing the 5800x3D for a long time. But so long that all the next gen stuff is coming out. I've been waiting out the ridiculous GPU market.
Can anyone give me a nudge in either direction for New Build - 5800x3D or next gen?
Was debating waiting to do all this on Black Friday.
For me, I had an existing AM4 socket build that I wanted to keep going for the next 3-4 years so I upgraded my 3600 for this, and will maybe upgrade my GPU at some point in the next 6 months... But that's specifically because I DIDN'T want to rebuild the whole thing from the ground up.
In your case, It's probably worth it to wait until Black Friday to see what deals come out. Having the choice between 12th and 13th gen Core and Ryzen 5000 or 7000 chips will give you a TON of flexibility...

I could be wrong, but this chip is so strong that I don't see it dropping to $200 at retail. It's become something of a legend in its short life span. It beats the 7950x in several benchmarks for gaming and I would expect its resell value will remain strong for several years, as the AM4 platform is very popular and lots will be looking for a drop in upgrade. And of course, for me (or anyone on AM4) to switch to the Intel or even AM5 platform, it would require me to commit to a new motherboard and possible new RAM.
Have a 2070 Super and AMD 5 3600 and riding it out for a bit
Can still benefit if you're willing to wait until new X3D lineup comes out (Q1 probably) though. This will probably get cheaper, and there's a chance they will do a 7600X3D which would be a mid range powerhouse.
