Amazon at this price from last deal. If you need macbook now, do not need to wait hoping further reduction, go for it, even if at this price, this is worth it and value for money for every penny.

If you're concerned about performance and throttling—and you're experiencing issues with them in your current day-to-day usage—the 14" Pro is the way to go. You get twice as many high-performance cores as the base M1, twice as many graphics cores, active cooling, and twice the RAM and SSD on the base configuration. You don't want to get a brand new laptop and risk hitting its performance ceiling right out of the box.
I'm not sure how to differentiate it to answer you. But it's a 2019 model with an intel processor. Beyond the terrible performance, awful battery and keyboard where the same key keeps getting stuck despite replacing it 3 times, it does get really hot to the point I always use a laptop pad. And it makes a lot of fan noise.
I think one of the issues is I have to use chrome for work and keep multiple tabs open all the time (5-6). But that really shouldn't be too tough for a laptop to handle this day and age.
I've heard the Air M2 and 14 Pro M1 are both fantastic. I like the idea of having the Air battery life and lower weight, but I don't want to get a computer that isn't strong enough for my needs performance wise.

Ok that last paragraph makes me feel better. Let me be clear — this is a work laptop so the cost isn't an issue. It's about getting me a laptop that won't have me pulling out my hair daily like this one.

If work is footing the bill, I'd probably choose between the M2 Air 16GB/512GB and the base 14" Pro. That Air configuration is $100 more expensive and slower across the board, but it gets you the super-sleek chassis and longer battery life. If it was your own money, I'd pick the Pro for the performance overhead (and thus longer service life). In your case, though, it's probably worth just using both at a store display and seeing which one you love. Either one will be a huge quality of life upgrade over your Intel model.

How do you find the performance? What kind of programs are you using and at what intensity? What about stuff like heat and fan noise?
It's a tough decision at nearly double the cost, but it's the best decision if budget permits and you need/see value in a highly upgraded model above the MacBook Air M1.
