I have this laptop and it's extremely frustrating how badly I want to like it, but can't. It's an extremely nice laptop that I hate using day-to-day.

Confusing statement, probably, until you understand why:

- this is one of the slimmest profile gaming-capable laptops out there in the market. the screen is incredible, things are speedy, and regular use is incredible.
- there are, however, a few experience-breaking flaws.

speakers are extremely soft and underpowered. even at 100% physical and software volumes, it sounds like average speaker volume for any other laptop out there. and because they're underpowered, there's frequent crackles and static, even with regular browsing/streaming.
the laptop cooling system is wonky AF. as other commenters noted, the laptop will ratchet up to burn-your-thighs heat, and then have an epileptic fan attack trying to cool it down even 5 degrees. the support recommendation is to underclock your laptop. let's not even go into how ridiculous that is.
putting your laptop to sleep isn't "possible." the cooling drivers are broken so things don't "sleep" properly. asus' sleep mode is effectively "turn the screen black and change nothing else." if you hear your laptop making sporadic wheezing sounds while it's "asleep" ... that's why.

all in all, for $1000, it's a fine laptop. you'll be able to play most things you want with it, but you'll also be plagued by constantly wondering how it's possible to mess up the simplest things on a laptop.
it's this price almost every other week. i returned it since it overheats while idle.. i was hitting 70C.. folks suggest undervolting or whatver it's called to the point this machine is probably only performing ~70% of its full potential
ASUS quality control is widely known to be absolutely horrendous. I've bought/returned 7 of their gaming laptops over the past 2 years myself, including two of these, so always test the stuff out thoroughly within your return period. For the price it's a great deal, and even though I've had terrible luck with ASUS, I'm still tempted to keep trying. Just know what you're getting into before buying. It's a toaster with a display, but performs great. If you're ok with the heat or don't mind losing a bit of performance by doing the usual tweaks G14 users have done for the past few years to help keep those thermals in check, then you'll most likely enjoy this laptop.

70C is not overheating. It probably has a high idle temperature, because it has a fan profile set to minimize noise. The fans were most likely barely spinning.

70c? Ok, whats the problem? Put the thing in silent mode and set a lower power target if you arent loading it. Sounds like less of a machine issue and more of an issue with user education.

70c at idle? that's too high lol.. just my 2 cents. i browse various pages/subs on fan curves/profiles, nothing to my liking.

If it's not thermal throttling, it's not overheating. That's pretty much all there is to it.

90-95c is generally the upper limit for safe usage. Some cpus and gpus run even higher than that regularly but most have their safety set at about 99. I think this one is set to 96 by default (might be wrong) so as long as you're at 95 or under you are definitely not overheating. No matter where in the 90s it is set at that doesn't change that 70c is not overheating.

70c at idle isn't overheating but that's abnormally high for idle
